I have never painted and I want to practice on a fiberglass golf cart body to see how it goes. I am hoping to learn a bit and maybe try the vette some day. The paint on the golf cart is in perfect condition, do I just clean it and scuff it up with maybe some scotch brite to get it ready? I am going to use the dupli color paint shop urethane paint that does not require reducers or hardeners. It is base coat clear coat. I know this is a very basic question and not on topic for corvettes but I would rather screw up a golf cart than my corvette and figured this would be a good learning experience. any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
If your goal for the cart is to get the feel for the spray gun and practice laying down some material, you can scuff it up with a scotch brite pad and go for it. Just know that this method will take a long time, you'll probably get some fingermarks grooves in final the finish, and the material may not stick to the cart in the long run. Using a DA sander is the way to go for prep if you'd like the new paint the cart to adhere properly. The DA sander will be much faster and it'll give the urethane a good surface to bite onto. My vette has me getting back into paint and body and I'm enjoying it so PM if you'd like. I'd be happy to offer advice.
I'm in the same boat....have a hood I am going to paint first, then the car. Picked up a great Sharpe Finex FX1000 Mini-HVLP gun for the small jobs and a nice DeVilbiss QC3 3-Stage Air Filter/Dryer Unit.
I'll spray some parts first for practice.
My biggest challenge will be painting the car matte black. (my look I am shooting for is brushed aluminum exterior parts (wheels, etc. and matte black body)
