which Iwata ?

Iwata guns are some of the best in the business, I have two myself.
But for a first time painter, or someone looking to only paint one car they are not real practical.
The LPH400 is the gun's platform. The numbers after are for tip sizes, nozzle and cap combo's and even for the gun type (HVLP, LVLP compliant, and Conventional) The tip colors, sizes and type are
So the buyer can fine tune the gun for his needs.
Their is no "one for all" Iwata gun.
Iwata guns are professional guns, and are fine tuned for each coating. I have the 400 LVX for base coats and WS400 1.4 for clears. I love them but ive got over $1200 in them with the accessory's needed.
When you buy an Iwata, your paying for the extra fine tunning and little features they have. Features a first time painter or a hobby painter would never notice, or use. It would be like me buying a professional generator to power a lamp in my house.
Their are many guns that are designed for new painters or someone who is looking to paint their own car. They come with multiple tips and nozzles to spray any coatings and work well for most types of air systems. They are also priced fair.
The Devilbiss Finishline is a great gun for someone looking to paint their own car. It's only $200 and includes 3 tip/nozzle combo's in 1.3 1.4 & 1.8 for heavy primers. It has a low CFM rating so it will work with most small compressors. It has great atomization for base coats, clear coats and primers. The best feature is the price. It offers the most bang for the buck of any gun on the market.
The Devilbiss CVi is also another good gun.($329) It is a lot like the Finishline but is more professional. It uses all stainless parts and is waterborne complaint. Like the Finishline it includes 3 tip/nozzle combos. Except it includes a "Trans-tech" HVLP compliant tip that allows it to have the atomization of a HVLP gun, But only use the air volume (CFM) of a conventional gun. (LVLP). It is a great gun to spray all types of coatings and will last many many years.
But if you are stuck on Iwata guns the LPH400LV is the most universal gun they offer. It will spray base coats and clear coats well, And for another $100 you can order a 1.7 or 1.8 needle, fluid nozzle and air cap to spray primers. It is a great gun and is better then the two I mentioned above, But only if you have a good air set up and you plan to use it often. If not, You wasted a lot of money to achieve the same results of the guns above.
A better gun dose not mean a better finish.
When picking a gun, you should find one that will work best for you air set up and the coatings you plan to spray. It don't matter if you have the best gun in the world, If it is not meant for the type of coatings your spraying, or you don't have the air it needs then it will spray no better then a $19.95 harbor freight gun.
OK well maybe thats a little extreme but you get point.
If you plan to taking up the painting trade either as a professional or a weekend warrior, then an Iwata is hard to beat and I will be more then happy to help you pick the Iwata set up best for you. But if you only want a good spray gun to paint your own car, I strongly suggest another gun. You will have better results from another more universal gun.
