Default Garage or Booth?

I'm starting to strip my 75 coupe tonight and just received SPIs Epoxy primer in the mail today. I plan on spraying the primer and doing all of the prep work in my garage. My question is would I be better off finishing it in my garage or transporting it to the booth. I have access to a paint booth at the local AirFarce base (I'm Navy), but worry about trailering the primed car over there before I spray. I would be using my grandpa's open car hauler trailer to get it there. I just worry about contaminates and what not during transportation. It is about a 45min drive. My primer gun can run off of my home compressor, but I would need to rent a bigger one for my paint gun. The cost of the booth rental and compressor rental is about the same.....

What would you do?

First, I would be respectful enough to the other services (I'm Air Force with an "o") especially if I was considering using their services... Second, depending on the size of your garage, if it is large enough to hang sheeting and spray your car, I would probably do that... Seen many a nice paint job on this site that folks do in their garage...

No harm intended, just a little inner service rivalry razzing.

Thanks for the input, my garage is big enough.. I was just wondering if the benefits of a downdraft booth are worth the hassle of transporting and re-prepping.

Use a booth if you can. It will save you much sanding and polishing... and the booth is set up to deal with your overspray in a safe, environmentally friendly fashion. Buy a cheap eBay cotton car cover for the trip over there if you worry about surface crud... and spray happy.

It all depends on how how much crap you have in your garage. I do all my painting in my garage with little or no dirt and I don't use plastic, but my garage is basically empty, even the compressor is in my basement. Items and shelving collect dirt which can get airborne when using a fan. If you have these items, then line your walls and ceiling with fresh plastic for your topcoats. There would be some risk of contamination transporting the car, but the big thing is time in the booth and what can go wrong. Just getting set up in a new place and getting everything working will take extra time. You will be rushed to get it done in the booth within a certain time frame, and you'll need to time to clean-up as well. You'll need to let the topcoats cure at least an hour before transporting it home. I would be more concerned about damage loading and unloading the car with fresh paint.

Since you are asking this question, you are probably still learning, so do it at home, where you can concentrate on laying the products down within the paint manufacturers time frame and your time frame. You never know what will go wrong, which will always require additional time.

I just did this in the garage, came out clean. As long as you prepare properly, don't worry, it's all in the details.

Crazywelder, Thank you! It seems more logical to say put now.

I just stripped the front clip, rear deck and the top tonight with my brothers help. Razor blades are definatly the way to go!

If I had access to a spray booth I would definitely transport the car to the booth, now your in a well ventilated clean environment for spraying your car, all you have to do once you get the car there is to clean and prep sol the car off before taping and painting, not having to breath in any of these paint fumes is well worth any extra effort it takes to get the car there. As per my knowledge you should transporting your car to the booth because they will provide you best service. It is just waist of time or money and you know that both are very important for us.
