Default Could Use Some Advice

Also posted on PNW Forum

I have finished prepping a set of (old used) exhaust stacks to fit a Rolls Royce Merlin engine (Think -P51 Mustang, Spitfire, etc) as used on a vintage unlimited hydroplane.I want to paint them flat white using some sort of high-temperature paint. I've been searching the web and there seem to be different types and brands of paint and ideas on prepping the parts.

I am not quite sure what sort of temperature these stacks will realize, but they are very short and the Merlin is "water" cooled so I doubt that we'll see any temperatures like 2000 degrees.

I would appreciate any advice that any of you can offer with your own experience using these VHT paints. Even Rustoleum makes the stuff. Do I need to prime them before applying the white paint? Do I need to heat the parts up before painting, as some sites suggest? (I think my wife might have some emotional issues with me using the kitchen range to "bake" 12 exhaust stacks). What's the best brand of paint to use?

Oh, we're going to want to do some "engraving" on each stack after painting. Or we may use some small brass tags and attach them somehow to the painted stacks.

Any thoughts, ideas, advice?

Seems like you would be ok to bead blast them and paint with the high temp paint of your choice. Not sure how well any brand will hold up to the temperature they may see. By the way, I've always been a big fan of the unlimited hydroplanes, I lived in Owensboro, KY and watched the Governors Cup for many years.

Thanks. Good advice. I considered bead blasting, but spent a few hours with a wire wheel and managed to get them back to pretty good shape. They were used but the Miss Bardahl guys made a deal for us and I think we're in good shape.

I spent most of last week prepping them and this morning started painting them with VHT flat white including primer. They're not perfect, but I think we're okay. We didn;t have an oven so just put a kerosene heater on them. Don't know if that will work or not..

Glad to hear your a hydro guy from one of the best venues. You might want to check out our museum's website.

Thanks again. That was helpful
