I do not know anything about painting. My car is currently in the paint shop. It is not a Corvette restoration paint shop but a third generation shop that used to repair these cars when new. The car is an original Daytona Blue car. I have been told to paint it with single stage enamel but I do not really know what that means. I want the car to look as close to what the original factory lacquer looked like when it was new. The owner wants to put clear on it but I am afraid that will make it look too much like a shiny cheap plastic toy. Can someone please recommend to me how to get the best end result for what I am trying to achieve. I will then take your advice back to the owner / painter so that he will know what I want.
Jay. I think I can help you with some information. I'm the lead bady and body man at the Rev's Institute museum in Naples Florida. We are leading the way in preservation and correct restoration. Meaning if we must restore a car. We use the exact materials used. Our goal is to preserve/ restore cars back to the original state as New. Not better than new. Factory flaws are included in our restoration process.
with all that said. The reason your paint shop wants to clear the car is that a single stage paint with metallic can not be sanded and polished. So a clear coat is added to remove any blemishes with out disturbing the metallic.
if you are looking for an exact restoration they should be using acrylic laquer with a clear coat. As the factory used.
TPC GLOBAL has the paint you need and will be able to mix the correct Daytona blue for you.
the car should have onhave coats of clear applied and orange peel / gun texture should be present as the factory would have done.
I will be happy to help with any other questions.
as a side note. You may find it hard to find a shop to do a correct paint job. Using correct materials.. the single stage paint will be more brilliant than a factory laquer in polished paint job as the factory would have done.. it will just not have the same feel as an original..
