Tack cloth: A lot of even good paint guys don't know how to use a tack cloth 'right'. And that's another point of rookie problems. I've seen sooo many body guys take them out of the pack and start using them all folded up. That's a no-no. For a tack cloth, first off, go buy a GOOD one, not the cheapest. Then, remove it from the package, unfold it COMPLETELY into one unfolded cloth. Let it sit an hour unfolded. Then, lightly bunch it up in your hands loosely and use it with no pressure, flip and re-bunch it as needed. Or better yet put in a tupperware container loosly bunched up the night before. What you don't want to do is have wet, waxy corners leave deposits on your primered or paint surface that you don't see until the next day ....from a fresh tack cloth that has sharp sticky ends. Common rookie mistake. Then tack before spraying, then between coats. I always let them sit in a sealed container overnight. They're so much nicer to use the next day. They'll last for a long time if ya keep them sealed up.

I know this is an old thread but is still helpful. Mark mentions using a tack cloth between coats--which I have heard before. Wouldn't this assume that the first coat is completely dry? i have NOT done this in the past but I get the concept. Typically (again small parts/golf cart size projects) I spray 3 coats of base and 3 coats of clear. This usually gets me the coverage I need but my dry time between base coats is typically only 15 min (i think--PPG Deltron) and while I have never dragged a tack cloth across the paint, I would assume it is still not fully dried.
Glad I found this thread............................. very helpful. Chris your work is awesome. I didn't see any mention of Featherfill by Evercoat. I've always heard good things about it. I'll be tacking my "Project X 57" over the next few months and want to give it the best treatment, but not an NCRS trype restoration, jsut a super nice driver with a hint of 60s - 70s drag racing look.. Advice and suggestions always appreciated.
