Default Original wheel paint process

Can someone help with the original wheel paint process? I have heard black self etching paint with one coat of silver paint on front. If correct, this sounds like it leaves the wheels exposed as primer doesn’t protect much.

This is what I recall reading about the process and found on the NCRS site:
https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...511#post467511
The wheels were hung on hooks and sprayed semi gloss black by KC. When the wheels arrived at the assembly plant they were sprayed argent silver on the outside no masking so there is over spray on the back side. I am not sure if they were hung on hooks at St. Louis or just shot on the floor. There were several shades of silver used on C3 Corvettes over the years some brighter silver, some darker some looked like a hammer tone finish on the spare wheel. The green tint does show on some 69 to early 70 wheels; this green tint faded away over time once they were exposed to sun light.

I planed to blast mine, self etching primer, 2K, sand and paint. Not really sure why they don’t recommend sand blasting, maybe it will remove the numbers at the valve stem?

Or perhaps sand blasting makes obvious changes to the texture of the surface. Anything that potentially alters the original appearance of a part is never recommended in NCRS circles.
