Default Ontario Orange paint code

I have just bought a 69 Coupe which I am going to get painted her in Perth, Australia by a local Tech School.

I want to paint it in Ontario Orange and need to get the right paint code for them for mixing up the paint.

On their computer when they type in WA3959 it comes up as "Carousell Red" not Ontario Orange, so I need to do some research to make the right colour is applied

I can supply them with the names and GM Colour Code, but is there another way to get the right formula ?

Could you also let me know if this is a SOLID or METALIC colour ?

When I look up the GM Colour Codes "Monaco & Ontario Orange" have the same WA3959 but different 990 & 991 and they are also in the RED colour codes.

I have no experience with paints so any help will appreciated

Andy

It is code 990, also it is called hugger orange on a camaro. It is a solid color. Pontiac had the same color but different name for it.

I think that's where the OP is getting conflicting information. On the GTOs of that era, Pontiac called the color "carousel red"............

Thanks leadfoot4, that is what is coming up on their screen when WA3959 is typed in.

Would this mean he can use this formula to get the Ontario Orange ?

Is there a way of getting the formula or mixing colours to compare ?

I wouldn't exactly stake my life on it, but I'll say that it's "most likely" the color that you want. Paint formulations do vary, and sometimes even mistakes are made. My wife was the original owner of an orange '76 Corvette. The older brother of her best friend was so impressed with her car, to the point that he went out and bought one, too (supposedly the same color). One day they had the cars parked side by side, and it was noticeable that the cars were two different colors.

They looked at the paint codes on the car's VIN tags, and the codes were the same....yet the colors were indeed different. That left them scratching their heads, until years later, after my wife and I met and got married, and I found a story about that color difference. Apparently GM purchases it's car paints in rather large quantities, to the point where they bought only two batches of orange paint, that year. And the paint supplier made a "little mistake" when they mixed up the second batch of the orange paint order.............or was it the first batch that they mixed, that was wrong???

FIREMIST SUMMARY -
In the early 1960s, the Engelhard Corporation of Iselin, New Jersey, developed and trademarked Firemist paint pigments. The flakes allowed light to reflect and refract through them, producing not only a bright glittery look to the paint, but also varied hues of the primary paint color. Because these flakes can reflect and refract light, Firemist is not a metallic paint, in the truest sense of the word. A true metallic paint contains tiny aluminum flakes that only reflect light.

The above paragraph was taken from a previous post by firstgenaddict

I took a considerable amount of time trying to get the colour close....cheaper paint brands were not even close. I ended up with RM (BASF) Onyk, water based. Now keep in mind my paint for a 1971 and 1972 was called Ontario Orange, door tag # 987 and Code WA4149. I would think the same paint brand is available to you down under. One thing I found was I painted the hood, convertible top cover, headlight doors and other small parts separate from the body and doors and there doesn’t seem to be any colour variation. As said in the above paragraph Ontario Orange is not a true metallic. You have to be in the direct sunlight to see any indication of a metallic type finish. Out of the sun it just looks orange. Now having said all that, my experience is very limited so don’t take my info as gospel. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions...

I am getting a little bit closer in my search, think I have found a company that may be
able to supply the "Firemist Pigment"

The next step is getting the formula and quantities for the Ontario Orange

I have sent thru a PM to DUB hoping he might be able to shed some light on this question.

Go to page 147 of the thread below. It shows a Corvette in the shade of orange that I was familiar with/referring to. Not the "firemist" color in the above post, that "Norm07" posted. Hope this helps...
