Default 98 C5 And Need Cam Pick

I Have A 98 C5 A4 With Some Mods And Am Trying To Pick A Cam That Wont Eat Into My Wallet Using Stock Heads. I Have 342 Diff With 3000 Tc, Black Wing, Slp Maf And Bellows, B& B Shorties And When They Arrive A Bbk 80mmtb And Intake... What Cam Do You Recommend With Springs That Still Keep Car Streetable And Dont Cost A Fortune For Springs And Retainers. In Addition With The Auto Do I Have To Remove Pcm And Have Reprogrammed.....best Bang For The Buck With Least Mods Computer And Otherwise...thanks Kevin

It would be hard to beat the TR224 considering the mild T/C that you have. Go with PRC or Patriot Gold springs, you can buy the springs, retainers, seats and seals in a kit from Thunder Racing. They also make the cam I mentioned. Mike Norris (Next Level Performance) is in Orlando Fla. he can install your cam and dyno tune your car. Or you can have someone local do the install, and get a mail order tune from Mike Norris or one of the other tuners on the forum.

The 599.00 package just mentions cam and 918 single springs, I'm not sure if it also includes retainers and seats. Ti Retainers are nice to have but are not manditory. Since you are not racing you can do without them.

You can buy the cam for 429.00 and the complete Patroit valve spring kit. That includes dual springs, Ti retainers, seats and seals for about 300.00. Food for thought.

You won't gain as much power since you have shorty headers instead of LTs. You should pickup 25+RWHP I would quess.

Thunder should have the kit. You can also buy it direct from Patroit.
As mentioned above Futral cams are excellent great driveability and power. Plus you can buy one for just 340.00 while they are on sale.
Food for thought.

Least inexpensive would be 02 or 03 ZO6 cam, several places have them new for $200, Mallet is selling ZO6 takeoff springs for $35 a set. with that torque converter you will then be putting in a cage because you should run high 11s with decent tires.. No tuning necessary.http://www.mallettcars.com/4_sale/ta..._off_parts.htm

I have to disagree IMHO he will not be able to run the 11s with that mild T/C, shorty headers, stock heads & LS6 cam. You're correct in pointing out this would be the cheapest route. But not the best route if he is looking for much better performance. To run the 11s on a consistent basis, he will need a bigger cam than the LS6 cam.

the 228/114* cam is very popular, gives good hp/tq numbers and tunes nicely for street manners....

If you want smooth idle the 114lsa would be better. I have a little cam (222/222 on 114) and it is very smooth, idles around 850rpm with tune.
