What are the basic requirements for a helmet for drag racing and maybe some auto cross?
Suggestions on where to buy?
Things to look for?
Expected cost?
Any suggestions on a place where I could try them on for fit?

Two rating types
M= Motorcycle
SA = Auto (fire retardant)
Every five years there is a new standard they are built to.
90 = = 1990 and fairly old
95 = 1995 and wider acceptance
00 = 2000 and the newest standard
SA is higher than M
Most tracks accept M90 up to SA00.
Autocross I am not familiar with but likely will require SA and will not allow an M helmet.
I would recommend an SA00 if you are doing multiple types of racing. M00 if just drag racing and you want to save about $100 difference.

To try them on, you will have to find a local speed shop or go to a racing event where manufacturers will have them there or you can trial fit into someone else's to be close in size. The all offer way to measure your head for a fit.
Cost, you probably cannot buy a new 95 helmet so you would be looking at 00 helmets.
The M's cost about $100 less than the SA.
You can buy from as little at about $100 to over $1,000
Most entry SA helmets are about $250 or so.
