Default 3:15 versus 3:42

I am considering switching out my 2:73 rear for a bit more quick response off the line. I am curious how big a difference I will notice in a 3:42 vs a 3:15. I am leaning towards the 3:15 since it was an option available on my 2002. I am concerned if I go more than the 3:15 I may void my GMP extended warranty. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I have no idea about the warranty, but I went from 2.73 to 3.42 and thought it was just right. I also added a Yank 2800 stall which is a must while you are doing all of the labor to change the diff. My only thought is that I maybe should have went with a 3200 stall instead of the 2800.

It all depends on what you are wanting to do, but I would not recommned going to all of the trouble to change gears only to go from 2.73 to 3.15. I would go at least 3.42 and at a minimum, a 2800 stall. Good luck and post some more about your driving habits if you want a more detailed recommendation

I changed from the 2.73 to 3.42, but did not change my TC. I went to the dragstrip, 1/8 mile, and had absolutely NO CHANGE in my ET or mph.
This really surprised me. Not worth the cost of making the change.

Was th weather the exact same?Track conditions? I too had the same experiance with the 3.42 but alot had to do with the tune and the weather. Also do you feel any change in take offs? Harder stronger faster feeling?

You must be sure the track conditions where the same from run to run to make an accurate comparison. The gears probably helped by .2-.4 in the 1/4. Many people see better increases in performance from a different TC

If I were to make a change I would go with the 3.42's as well. However I would NOT say that 3.15's suck for performance on an A4. I have run a 1.65 60 foot with my 3.15's and an 11.85 1/4 mile.

When I ran my 3.42 vs. 2.73, the temperature was about 90. Last time I ran it probably was about 80. I did no spin. I probably should have reved up to a higher rpm perhaps.

I'm going from the 3:15's to the 3:42's, I know its a small improvement percentage wise, but cost wise it was better for me right now and it is still an upgrade. I also did the Yank Ss 3200 at the same time, there is a noticable difference, or at least for me I noticed a difference.

The difference you feel is the SS3200, swapping gears once you have a decent T/C won't gain you much in the way of performance. Especially going from 3.15s to 3.42s.

What tires did you have on to get that 1.65 60' time?

It won't even be a tenth at the track. It will only make the pedal feel tighter. 3.73's would make it even tighter, like stock. But still, not much of a gain at the track.

If you are going to change out the 2.73's go to 3.42. The car will be feel much better. I test drove a 2.73 gear car and I ended up getting the 3.15 and am much happier.

Mitch,
I think I have almost made up my mind to go with the Yank SS3200. However, as you know, I have a mild heads/cam job on my car, and have really decent low-end torque. I really like that the car shifts at 6200 on the 1-2 and 6400 rpm on the 2-3 shift. That runs the mph out pretty good with the 3.15s. I would lose a lot of that with 3.42 gears, and don't really think they would do much for me, acceleration-wise, over the 3.15s. I do want a car that does not feel loose in normal driving, yet really gets with the program when you punch it. I hope to get rid of, or at least improve response, in that zone about 37-38 mph where the car only downshifts to second gear, rather than first, and I'm hoping that the car will really jump at freeway speeds when downshifted (actually it's pretty good following a high speed downshift now..but even more would be great!).
Do you think the 3.42s would do that much for me as far as reducing any perceived looseness or increasing the cars performance on the street? Thanks!
Ed
