The rev limiter cuts off fuel to the engine at a prescribed rpm to protect it from over-rev damage. Once the engine rpm drops below another set point, the fuel flow is turned on again.

Hitting the rev limiter does not harm the engine.

Also keep in mind that the rev limiter will protect you from over-reving the engine on an upshift. But if you wrongly grab 2d when you want 4th, the rev-limiter will not keep you from badly over-reving and perhaps breaking something in the valve train.

You stay off the limiter by remaining below its set-point. The owner's manual states the "fuel cut-off" rpm for your car. That=rev limit.

You stay off the limiter by remaining aware of where your engine rpm is (the tac). Experienced racers seeking to get every last bit of acceleration from their cars typically shift at the highest rpm possible without kissing the limiter.

Then the answer is simpler. Let the computer do the shifting for you. You'll never hit the limiter and the shift points are better than you can choose for yourself...as you've discovered by banging the limiter.

I missed your sig with the A4 info and wandered off to the M6/12 path. Sorry for the detour.

If you ever do any upgrades....expecially a cam you will want a custom tune that will increase the rev limit.....changing springs and push rods with a high lift cam will allow you to make more power above the stock rev limiter setting. These engines have many safegards against blowing them up including the fuel shutoff or rev limiter and knock sensors.
