The Hurst is one of the best shifters out there. Some people don’t care for them, but I’ve never heard of anyone having a problem shifting into 2nd gear with the Hurst. Are the stop bolts properly adjusted? If the bolts are not properly adjusted, or have come loose it could cause difficulty in engaging 2nd gear.
If you totally hate the Hurst, you may want to try the C6 Z06 shifter. People seem to like it as an alternative to the Hurst and B&M shifters.
I have the Husrt shifter and will say it's notchy at best but I have never had a problem getting it in gear. It just takes a little more effort than a stock one. If if won't go into gear there must be something wrong.
Maybe this is just a defective one. Back in the 70's, when I use to street race old Chevys you couldn't beat a Hurst. Any common trans. problems that could cause this? 3 times straight........would not go into 2nd, it was jammed in the neutral position...finally got it into 3d...still recorded 119mph. If I drive any where and shift normally, it works o.k. still not smooth, though.
i had a hurst shifter and tried everything and couldnt get into 2nd or reverse sometimes and it felt like crap, changed to a kirban and feel SOO much better.. take al ook at kirban great design and feels smooth shifting and still nice and short
