Good start would be a CAI like Vararam, maybe a DYNO tune too.

But cheap and mods dont mix

Vararam $300.00, Dyno Tune - $400.00 to $500.00

The cheapest mod is to learn to drive. After that I agree with above. Vararam and tune. A good set of tires will help too.

I don't know about cheap, but I'd love to hear about that "chip"

A good cold air intake, t-stat and tune is a great place to start.
After that, look into exhaust as the budget permits. Cat-back and then some headers down the road will make a significant difference.

Default performance upgrade

was looking at the rpm outlet little package with diablo tuner, pulley, spark plugs and new spark plugs? I am going to most likely get slp catback for christmas and I have a haltech intake. Do you think its worth buying that tuner and a pulley or could i make better power for around 600 dollars. Is diablo the best way to go or should i go some other way? Thanks for the advice...

for 600 dollars get a handheld tuner with adjustable parameters and a vararam.sparks plugs and wires won't give you any horsepower.

If you want, you can get a used exhaust for around 600 bucks.Something like a b&b bullet system or borla stinger setup.

Default tuner

what kind of handheld tuner? Should I trade my haltech for a varaam? I have good things about both and people that are hot and cold with the varaam. Any difference in performance between different cat back exhaust?

if you already have the halltech then don't waste your time putting a vararam on.As far as the people who complain about he vararam, you CANNOT dispute track proven results, period.

There is a minimal different as far as power gains from changing your exhaust. It is more for achieving the certain tone you want.

Cam vararam ebay headders and tune, each under 500.

No piggybacks required for tuning, just software and cable. I'd personaly get a cam for 300 and try to find somone local who can help you install it, offer a case of good beer or somthing they would appriciate as a thank you gift.. I do that all the time and always have a good time, learn a lot, and do it on the cheep! Lots of people, myself included like to tinker with cars so there are people willing to help you if you are gracious and appriciateive.

Cat back is one of the last things to consider IMO, much better places to spend your money, headders and no cats will give you a better sound than a catback IMO.

I have heard from many that the ls1 can take up to a 100 dry shot without any internal work.

People have even run more than that on a stock block. Just cause it doesn't blow up doesn't mean the block isn't going to need to be freshined up after extended use.

The block will handle 250 shot easily. It is all about your setup. Horror nitrous stories are from stupid people (no offense to anyone). You MUST get a progressive controler that will increase spray as RPMs climb. Spray at once is very very bad. Also get a dual stage. Do it right, and you can run Nitrous every day for 10 years without a single issue.

This is by far the cheapest hp per dollar mod. PERIOD

that is hard to believe. Most I have ever seen for sale on internet sites is 150.

also running nitrous everyday for 10 years...come on now....running your engine to reline everyday will not make it last 10 years.

Ok Im down with the 10 year thing maybe it was an overstatement. The 250 shot deal it has been done and can be done but only so many times. But this is looks like its turning in to "the nitrous thread". One thing I can say is that you can get a nitrous kit for 300 dollars and have the car tuned for 500 to run a 150-175 shot without hurting the motor. I have not only seen this done but I have done this myself on my last vette. I ran a untuned 150 shot on my last vette for 1 and half years before I sold it and all that ever went was my Clutch and it had nothing to do with nitrous. If you want to save on the tuning put the 150 shot on there and have fun just do your homework before hitting the button.
