Thanks for all the tips! Yea I've been reading up on Ranger's techniques. I'm hoping that my buddy will go up in smoke. I think I need to get him off the line because at the big end of the track he will be coming on hard.
It's amazing the talents of some of the drivers on here. The Z is an amazing beast but the driver really brings it to life!
I'm planning on some long tubes,CAI,throttle body by-pass and a
160* thermostat. Just beginner bolt-ons
It's going to be interesting! I'm playing up the "UnderDog" to the hilt!

275x40x17 Drag Radials on front Z06 wheels
Vararam
American Racing Headers
A great tune
With the new power you may need an aftermarket clutch (Textralia)
4.10 gears will wake it up but will overpower the street
Good luck. Confidence is 90% of winning.

May I suggest the best bang for the buck mods.

The GT500's are highly overrated from the factory. They put down 420-430 at the wheels stock, and are very hard to control on the 285 tires with all the torque they have. With a very good driver, bone stock they might go 12.50's at 114mph. Average times for stock range from 12.90-13.30. My dad has one and they feel a lot faster than they are. If he had a pulley swap then I would say watch out, but even with the KR package you should take him no problem. Now if he had the Super Snake upgrade then I would say watch out.

I would think that the stipulation that no drag radials be used should be amended. The point of this race is to prove who has the faster car. When two "nervous" novice drivers line up against each other on street tires...the result will be tire spin heaven. So guys bolt on some drag radials and have some fun,if not the races will be nothing but a pedal fest and will prove nothing.

We are staying with the no drag radials for this first proposed race, which should make it a drivers race, but are both planning on drag radials for future racing. In fact he just bought two new factory wheels for his DR's.
I'm planning on adding a set of long tubes, I already did the zip-tie mod (do you thing I'd be better off with a Vararam or Blackwing?) and will get a tune-all before the race.
We drive each other nuts at work going back and forth.
thank-you all for the tips, comments and such!
I hope I "Nail" that ford! lol

General consensus is Vararam is the way to go. Most vendors also get into pricing wars which drops the price way down on them. Just to reiterate though, you will get your best gains through practice, practice, practice. Probably be better off making passes until you reach the car's best before adding any power.

Good luck with the race.Hopefully you can whip that Ford.
Once you put a few good mods on your car,CAI,headers, and a gear (3.90 or 4.11)that Ford will be toast no doubt.

Coming from a former Mustang guy... I dont think you will have any issues at all. Unless he shows up on a trailer and ET Drags, you wont have much competition. These cars (C5's) come out of the hole like you wouldnt believe... but it does take practice. The track is very different from the street.
I have a friend that has a Whipple GT500 making 800 rwhp on 18 lbs of boost (Evolution) and the one thing thats killing him is keeping it under control coming out of the hole. He cant get traction with ET streets at all. Im waiting for him to go with ET drags and see what the car really has after it hooks and goes.

Hey Guys.......thanks for all the helpful hints and suggestions.
I just ordered a Vararam along with their Power Duct, plugs n' wires,
a 160* stat, and will do the throttle body by-pass.
I'm going to get a set of Melrose motorsports "Smooth tube" headers and then a good tune.
Then in early spring it will be practice, practice, practice per Ranger's list!
Then I hope it will be time to that big bad Shelby!
thanks

The race was set up stock to stock...but since then he's gone mad!
He made the KR upgrade, changed his rear gear to 3:73, now is looking at some form of traction control to help keep rear hop under control
He's gone mad I tell you!!!!! lol
That's why I'm performing those modest bolt-ons. I was going to up grade anyway, but like the square shooter I am I was going to wait until After the race!
I guess enough of the talk...I will have to walk Softly and carry a big
I think he's going to drive me crazy before spring and the race!

I put on Bilstein shocks up front,QA1 shocks in the rear, and a DTE trany brace with 17" Hossier DR's.The result was zero wheel hop from that time forward. The total cost was somewhere in the $1000 range (not counting the DR's).The good thing is that there is very little down time involved for the installation.
Wheel hop can be a big issue with a stock suspension and OEM tires.

Maybe on "old man cam" if you call that decent
In all seriousness though, there are quite a few cams out there you can put in, and with cats on the car, it will barely be noticeable until you start walking away from him hard. You really don't need a cam to beat that car though, trust me. Just practice, practice, practice.

I would do a small cam also. If he isnt too LS suavy then he would never know. My cam is a 228/232 dur 582-598 lift on a 116 and it doesnt sound too far off what a stock LS6 sounds like if you ask me. If he asks, just tell him you think you have a couple coil packs going bad. LOL
