Allegedly the '01 vette has oil consumption issues. I was just getting ready to purchase one when I find out about this. Anyone have the same problem? Anyone know what's the cause, or which production dates are applicable. Early in service date or?? Your input would be greatly appreciated.
I took over my '01 from a friend of mine who passed away last year. A few years ago I remember him telling me he got a new engine from the dealer and I'm pretty sure it was oil related (shoulda paid more attention). Not sure how widespread the problem is. I put about 4k on it along with a handfull of 1/4 mile passes and hasn't burned/leaked a drop.
If its late production 01 Z06 than not a problem, mine is dec built and no oil consumption here, but if i drive on drag strip (went only one time 4 passes) and i saw was little less than a quart, but thats normal for all vettes if racing, other than that normal driving in city/hwy with some blasts no problem, Zero oil issue.
I have possibly the last 2001 Z06 off the production line ( June 18th, '01) some changes did take place during the '01 production year such as the new designed pistons (mid April '01 for the LS6) to address the cold start piston slap.
I'm done a lot of research on this subject with documentation and quotes from the engineers involved. You can go to the archives and look under "oil consumption", "2001 Z06" or "oil burning" as topics for a couple of dozen threads over the last two years.
All LSx engines consume oil depending on variables right thru and including the LS2, ect.

If you are doing heads and cam, go for it and do the re-ring job while everything is apart. If you are planning to stay stock motor, stay away from 01s
This thread got me curious so I went to the dealer yesterday and pulled a vehicle history report (VIS). I saw that there was an engine replacement in Dec. 2006 when the car had 76k miles (has 90k now). Problem is, it doesn't show what the problem was and doesn't show what year engine was put in. I guess I would need to check the vin.
