I used to have a hurst in my car, actually loved it at the race track never missed a shift but i hated it on the street. Rattled too much, loud, notchy.
I am now using a 09 z06 shifter. I like it probably just because the feel of **** but it's not really a short shifter. Seems like i miss more gears with it. I know i need to practice shifting more, haven't been missing gears lately but my shifts just seem slow. It's probably just me, shifter isn't going to cure that but i would like more of a gated feeling shifter and shorter throws.
dont spend anymore money on aftermarket shifters...theyre ALL notchy...my mgw isnt loud...had their old 35% with the gripper ****...still have that **** if youre interested if you end up buying a mgw shifter..."upgraded" to their new 30% model that was supposed to be soooo much smoother....none offer close to a stock smoothness....all are notchy....but like i said its not noisy...the shifter does look extremely well made...the new one isnt a internal ball type and there are no centering springs in the shifter...the shifter utilizes shifting pins...the shaft doest have a rubber noodle feel thus taking the smoothness of the stock rubber noodle out of it and the vertical placement of the pins is whats making the throw shorter...I use the c6 handle and 08c6z ****....my opinion if you want smooth stick to the c6z...you can also shift plenty fast with those...just watch gary2004 shift...ranger....and many others
I have a Kirban with a C6Z shift ****. I like the notchy feel, but don't think it is as rough as the Hurst. I tried the C6Z shifter and it was way too sloppy for me. Didn't think it was much of an improvement over stock.
As far as the sound, you can insulate it some. Get creative with a large rubber disc or rubber cap. Heck I've been wanting to experiment by cutting up a beer coozie and slipping it over the shifter (under the boot of course).
A easy clean way to insulate the aftermarket shifter from outside noise/smells is to take a hurst rubber shifter base and cut the center out of old cover, center the hurst cover on top and rivit, bolt, etc it on. Then use some silicone around the edge. Worked great on my old b&M. I'm not sure where, but someone has a write up on doing this.
Ya, when i was under the console it definitely looked like something could be done to cut back on the noise under there. Well my 09z shifter is still notchy, it just feels sloppy that's the best way to put it. I have always shifted from the side, i think i will try out the MGW with the stock c6z handle and see how i like that. Christmas is coming up
I just wanted that gated feeling back. Sick of all the slop and the long shifts. Going to change out the fluid again, i have royal purple now but it's still clunky and doesn't always want to go into first sitting at lights. Going to try out some amsoil.
I have the MGW with C6Z ****. Didn't like it at first because of the stiffness, but it does loosen up quite a bit and feels great now. I would definitely recommend it.
I went from stock C5 to MGW and loved it. Couldnt get the shift **** I wanted not to rattle on the mgw so I got kind of frustrated, and sold it. I now have a 09 Z shifter and I liked it for the first few months, but am now tired of it.. the main thing I dont like is 2nd gear seems much longer/further to pull, and just dont like the numb feeling. the bolt action feeling from the aftermarket shifters is so awesome!!!!
I just bought a used B&M on here so we will see how I like that one.
