Default First run on the Z

Well it's been about 3 years now since I've driven a manual car and realized that it definitely takes some practice to put down a good time with the Z...

My 305/35/18 Nitto 555Rs would not stick even after a good stage. I spun hard at launch (2500 RPM), shifted at 6600 RPM to second, and it spun through most of second gear as well. Should I have let out air maybe?

2.0381 ----- 60 FT <-- stop laughing damn you
8.0955 ----- 1/8 MILE E.T
91.13 ----- 1/8 MILE MPH
12.3088 ----- 1/4 MILE E.T
117.10 ----- 1/4 MILE MPH

That was my best run of the night. I just could not get it to hook! Am I supposed to ease it out or should I be able to lay on it hard from the get go with DR's?

Maybe a crappy track (Little river dragway in Temple, Texas)? Just need more practice?

With what I've given you all, what do you think my car is capable of with a "perfect" run?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Not terrible for a first time out. You should definitely pull air out... I would start at 23psi and move up or down from there. Also I usually leave @ 5000rpms slipping the clutch to prevent wheelspin. Given your mph I would say the car has a solid 11.8 in it with a good launch, great launch will go even quicker.

Don't beat yourself up.

That is very respecable for your first time out in the Z.

For what it's worth, those tires suck on a drag strip.

More practice/seat time and you'll get better times.

not bad for your first time. when i first got my z my first run was 12.8 on f1's. i went with some bfg's after that and was able to run an 11.9@114.9 with a 1.6 60". what psi were your tires at? i usually start at 18 and go from there

a lot of it is track prep...when i first got my z i went to the strip and it was so bad i was pedalling it through 3rd gear running high 12s no matter how i launched and no matter how big of a burnout i did regardless of the tire pressure....they put some prep down and boom went from high 12s pedalling through the gears to 12.20 at 116 in 1 pass hooked in all 4 gears on a easy 1.95 launch

Get those Nitto's down to 18psi and do a BIG burnout before your 1st pass. Try launching at 3500 to 4000rpm and slip the clutch out while squeezing the throttle to full by the time the clutch is fully engaged.
It just takes practice and once you get the hang of it you should see some 1.7 or better short times and an 11 sec. pass.

Thanks for all the responses so far guys. Your help and advice is greatly appreciated.

I didn't even think about dropping some air out of the tires when I got there, but I will next time. Even if it's an 11.9, I'll be happy. I just DON'T WANT TO BE STUCK IN THE 12'S!

So the NT555R DR's suck? If I knew that, I would have went a different route.

If I got a different set of wheels and slicks for the rear, would that make a big difference?

Not sure what psi my tires were at because I was so excited about going to the track, i left my gauge at home. I'll start at 18 next time. 1.6 huh? You drag alot before getting your Z?

Figured as much. I couldn't figure out why I was spinning so hard through second even after making the tires sticky. Alot of people run slower times at that track then normal.

I'll drop the air pressure next time like you suggested and try slipping the clutch. Thanks for your help

And I'd be totally happy with that. When everyone else is in the 11's, and you're stuck in the 12's, IT SUCKS!!!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend guys

actually the z was the first car i ran at the track. my best 60" on 305/35/18 nittos was a 1.8 switched them out for some bgf's and i did several low 1.7's and a few 1.6's.

The 555r's are quality tires. Many forum members have cut 1.6's on them. They can be a little less consistent and/ or grippy than say the MT's, but they have more than enough to get you where you want to be.
