Pardon the newb question. I'm not satified with my search results. What type of results have been achieved when making a 1/4 mile pass in Drive as opposed to manually shifting the trans ?
The only experience I have is with pulling gears (T5) and power glides. If anybody can post 1/4 times in D versus shifting I would greatly appreciate it ..
I've always just left it in drive (3rd) and let it shift by itself. Mine has been tuned and the shift points set from the tune.
I'm not sure about the 1/4 mile time part of the "Q" . . . are you asking if you can go faster by manually shifting? If so, that would depend on how your car is set-up. tuned - upgrades - etc.
Put it in 3rd, then the overrun clutches are applied in all the gears (better for the trans and more holding power under harsh conditions). Unless you have a built tranny, most of the trans builders I know will drill a hole in a certain place in the valve body so that the overrun clutches are applied in D as well. That's my understanding, UNLESS, a C5 tranny has the valve body different than the other cars and trucks with 4L60E's in them.
If you talk to the weirdo at Atco with a dark blue LS2 GTO whose racing # is 007....
"IT'S FASTER WHEN I SHIFT IT MANUALLY!. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT, ITS CRAZY, I RAN 12S STOCK WITH THIS THING."
I'm sure most of you who go to Atco know who I'm talking about.
Anyways, I would put it in drive and let it shift its self. You can't shift an automatic faster than the computer can.
lol I know that dude he is a bit annoying at times ............he has been racing that car for like 4 years and still can't figure out to get some DR's I told him.... get some DR's if you want to hook up........... all that burn out biz with those goodyears.... your just wasting good street tires. I see i was wasting my fking breath talking to him

Thx for all the responses. Tonight I bolted on the 305-35-18 M/T Drag radials and Thursday it gets a final tune. A day at the track is hopefully in the near future..

the M/T DR's work real good..... I start out with 25 Psi at the track and see how they hook...... then work down from there

i would start my mt or hoosiers dr's the tire i use now both 255x50x16's at 18 psi and work my way up 1/2lb after each good pass in tire pressure till i would spin all the time keeping an eye out on temps and track condition. summertime i start at 19psi have been as high as 22psi once without spin on a great track prep and the very next pass spun as the temp dropped 4degrees and the sun starting going below the tree line also got a little to aggressive trying to launch at 2600rpms after having just successfully launched at 2400.
OP - leave a stock trans in drive. It'll work best for you. Even better if your tuner has manipulated it a bit.
As far as Craig (007). I like the guy. Sure, he's a talker, but he's a racer. He's there all the time. Doesn't want drag radials. Doesn't want to brake anything. He's always there.
I talk with him everytime I see him. You just have to lead the conversation so you can step out when you need to.

True, I'll talk to him if he in the lanes next to me too. And he has gotten a lot better over the years as well.
He did hold up the lanes a little but at the Late Model LSx versus Late Model Mopar event last month but he's still a good guy.
