Default Need your input 3.42 gears

New to the forum, so hello. Need to get some info from you guys that no this stuff.
I have a 02 coupe a4 with 2.73 gear. Mods are stage 4 cam from Thunder Racing ( lovin it) 3200-3400 stall converter long tube LG super pro headers and x pipe into Borla stinger. As of this time I'm at 420rwhp. What do you guys think a 3.42 gear will do for me. A lot of my play are rollons between 40 and 70. I know it will make for a tire frying bottom end, but what will it do to or for my 70 mph roll ons. Also I'm running about 1600 rpms at 70 and getting about 25 mpg on highway but maybe 17 or 18 mpg city. Thanks for any info

Similar set up to my heads/cam engine, and I went from 2.73 to 3.42 - a great mod, never heard anyone on this forum who said they didn't like it....

Thanks for the replies guys. Sometimes you just need to hear it from people who have similar cars. Also I may be a new member to the forum but I'm not new to reading this forum. I've noticed that most of you know what your talking about and help others. Again thanks.
While I'm here though does anyone know about what RPM I may be running at 70 after the change?

hello, When I had the items in bold above, I ran a consistent 13.1 @ Atco with a bias ply ET tire and stock fronts ... 3:42's pushed low 12's

I think you will feel a good "seat of the pants" pull with the 3:42 but take it to the track and get some seat time and find out what it will actually run.

Paper racing can go on and on for a long time and you'll never really know what it will run.

By the way how are you at 420 hp? What heads and intake/throttle body etc. are you running?

Thanks for the input, but no one has said anything about how the car will do at a 60-70 mph roll on. Will it rocket off or will it be no different than what It is now

Add a torque converter and it will take off like a rocket ship.

It already has a 3200 stall. But as it is when I'm next to a c5 z06 ( 60-70 mph roll) with less hp, it always gets a small jump and I have to run it down. Just wanted to know if 3.42s would start giving me the jump since I have more hp

The extra gear will get the engine spinning faster and provide extra torque multiplication, so you should have a good improvement.I mentioned the converter because a stock converter will hold back the engine on downshifts while a high stall will allow it to spin up more easily.

Also I was told my car dyno'ed 420 with 2.73, but that hp number would drop with 3.42. Is that true

IIRC, it will read lower but your car will end up being quicker in the end.

Thanks you've be a big help. Can't wait to swap. Not really as worried about numbers as long as it'll be quicker both bottom end and on the roll

You should be very happy. Before I bought my Vette, I test drove a convertible w/2.73 and the car felt anemic off of the line. It felt more like a highway cruiser than anything else. The 3.15 car feels a lot stronger off the line and from a roll especially if you've had a tune to alter the shift firmness and speed. I am up to 3.42 now and it is a small improvement over 3.15, but it will feel like a huge difference compared to a 2.73 car.

At 70 mph with a stock size rear tire, my engine was at 2100 rpm with a 3.42 rear and 4l60 trans.

Curious, what's your hp and how does your car compare to a manual w/3.42 rear

I have no idea what the HP is/was

My 6 speed vette (MM6) was about 1500RPM at 70 mph - if I remember correctly.

OD in the 4L60, MM6, and M12 are all different.
