Default Best performing exhaust?

I hear a lot about the stingers and bullets, but thats usually about how they sound. I would like to know what you all think the best performing exhaust out there is? Or if possibile what kind of gains you received from the exhaust on your car? Thanks

Goldenboy,

Adding a catback is for two things:

1. Looks
2. Sound

A catback does not add anything, worth discussing, in regards to performance.

The best option will be to get to a car show, or two, and find an exhaust that looks and sounds the way you want.

Not true. I gained 12 rwhp going with the borla staright pipe for $350. Guys with heads/cam that have gone the 3" exhaust have gained up to 20 rwhp. The higher the HP application, the power it will free up.

One of the Vette mags this month (can't remember which one, i get them all) did a dyno on a stock car, then added in B&B Bullets, then added in shorty headers. They did a dyno on each, and the results added a shade of 10HP from stock with the Bullets, and another 6 or so HP with the shorty headers.

Interesting article.

I agree with Vettethret: the more mods you add, the more restrictive a stock catback can be.

No, they are the stock diameter. When I do my blower I will be going with the 1 7/8 kooks and a 3" exhaust. If you plan on big power ahead go with a large diameter. Remember a motor is a big air pump. The more air in and out in the fastest way possible equal more power.

The term exhaust is a very subjective one IMO. Can one really label a B&B Bullet, Corsa Competition system or SLP Loudmouth in the same category as the standard Borla, Corsa Power Pulse, B&B, Stainless Works or even Borla Stingers or GHL type 'mufflered' exhausts?
I would think that the straight pipe style systems would have to outperform (they're certainly lighter) the mufflered systems but they will be substantially louder in most cases.
I think the Borla Stinger or the similar looking GHL might be a nice compromise between power delivery and (relative) quietness, Stainless Works looks good too.

On my old '99 M6 coupe and now my '04 A4, I picked up 11hp and 11lbs./ft. of torque using JCL's spiral baffles. Not a "pretty" setup like the Borlas and Corsas, but a very functional add-on. JCL is not a supporting vendor, but he's a member here. He's mostly known for the baffle exhausts he makes for the C3 sidepipe guys. Easy add-on with simple instructions. spiralturbobaffles.com if you want to check them out.

No, if you overdo the diameters, intake or exhaust, drivability and low to mid range torque will suffer. Charge VELOCITY is very important in the equation where you mention getting the air in and out in the fastest way. Bigger diameters are OK with bigger motors. There's a balancing act in matching all the components to achieve more power, especially on the street where you are operating at lower rpms for most of the time.
