Is this camera decent to use. It dates to 2012 I think. Never used it much, just started using my iphone. Had to remove the battery from the camera to charge it - too inconvenient.
Canon PowerShot SX500 IS

It's abit difficult to give a simple answer as it really depends. Short answer is if you are just doing snapshots then honestly nowadays cameras in phone are going to give you as good as shots at a Point and Shoot Camera (there are exceptions to this though).
To better answer your Question better we would really need to know the answer to this question: What is it about your current pics you don't like that you feel this camera may do a better job at?
The simple answer is to take some pics with it and see if fits your needs. Maybe you'll find out that you don't zoom often enough to carry a camera or maybe you'll find using a camera is much more fun than using your phone. The age of the camera has zero effect on how good the images can be (as long as it is functioning correctly).
Think about it like this, that little Canon is light years ahead of what the masters of photography were using in their day.
My hiking/backpacking partner has the 400 and the shots he gets are incredible. He has taken shots of the moon and then blew them up on the little screen and we could see the craters. For Macro shots you could see the veins in the flower petals. The 500 is even better. I would start taking pictures with it and see what you think. Oh and if it doesn't fit your needs, I will buy it from you, I was that impressed

Absolutely, we all know in order to get decent shots they had to do sometimes a serious amount of darkroom manipulation, as the equipment was incredibly crude. Today it is a whole different deal. Would love to have sat down with Galen Rowel while he pulled his shots. My hiking/backpacking partner has the 400 and the shots he gets are incredible. He has taken pictures of the moon on "Auto Stupid", difficult at best and I was pretty jealous, in a good way, the moon was perfect, and then he zoomed in to the point we were seeing craters. His Macro shots are so good you can see the veins in the flower petals. If you find you don't want the 500, make me a deal I can't refuse, as I will take it.

Yes, the camera is decent to use. Depending upon what type of photography you do, that camera might outperform any cell phone camera. Try to take an action shot with a cell phone in the bright sun.
