Those of you who came over from CFOT might remember this. Before this section was created I would share some photos over in CFOT. There are no photos I ever shown that were more controversial than the once using the infamous "Ring Light". About 50% the People said the pictures looked like crap about 25% said they were just OK and and the reaming 25% were very vocal that I was not even using the light properly!! I'm not kidding either...like full out debates!!! Now granted this is OT Section we are talking about where everyone is an expert on everything...but the people that were most vocal were not even those that understood the most basic things of photography. One person even tried to convince me that a "Ring Light" is used just for runway photos...you know where the Model is actually moving on a stage!! As you know for using an ring light the subject actually has to be very still and constant distance from the light source.
Anyway, fast forward now a year...and don't get me wrong I still have much to learn, but I just got my 3rd Magazine Cover all taken with the Infamous Ring Light that apparently I am still not using correctly!
As always feel free to give me any C&C on my photos.
As someone that knows nothing about model photography (and little about photography in general), this isn't meant as a criticism, just a sincere question... Is the intent to make the ring light reflection in the eyes stand out that much? It definitely seems to draw the viewer's attention straight to the model's eyes. Just hoping learn more about it.
out of curiosity, Rick, to "do it wrong" should the ring circle just the pupil? in the BW shot looks like her pupils are contracted too much and it makes the ring look off..

Those photos are spectacular!

That's just it, and my point as well... there is really not a right or wrong way of using it. Its just a another light source, I know some photos who have the "circle catch light" in the Pupil while other use it in the Iris. I have done both, though for me I like it just outside of the Pupil that illuminated the Iris. The light will never be exactly even in both eyes due to the angle the light source is hitting the subject. I also know photogs who don't even shoot though the "Ring"...which to me kinda defeats the purpose of using a ring light. So I don't really see as a right or wrong. My point of the post was that I was being told I was using this light source incorrectly by those that had absolutely no idea what they were talking about.
Ring lights are most common in Fashion Photography and are used because they are the only type of lights available that give the very distinct completely even lighting on the entire face. Not only do they give even lighting but yes they also leave a very distinct catch light in the eyes. Its not for everyone, though.
uhmmm, those are your words not mine. She's pretty; but, I think those eye brows overpower the real beauty of her eye's. I guess I'm an "eye" person, and not so much "*****" . . .
.......... you'll have to pardon my taking liberties with your photo . . .
I was thinking of this thread the other night as I was watching "Paranormal caught on Camera" and the producers have changed the interview setting when talking with the paranormal "experts". They were using ring lights and it was very distracting as all I saw was the ring in their eyes making them look abnormal. I guess that's good in a program about the paranormal. lol
