Two shots here taken moments apart. One shot I underexposed the background 1-1/2 stops. On the other, I exposed 'properly.' I understand this is personal preference thing but what's your preference? Underexposed. "Correct" exposure.
So I normally gravitate towards a slightly underexposed background....that said in this case I actually like the brighter more "equally" exposed Model to Background in this photo. For me the reason (in this case) has abit more to do with her hair. With the bottom photo the rim/hair light of the ambient like really brings out the color and it also makes the image much "softer" IMO. Both lovely but in this case for me I like the bottom photo.
I hope you are OK with me demonstrating a similar technique that I quite literally used just 6 days ago shooting on location to spark some conversation. In the Top image the ambient is underexposed by ~2 full stops so the Strobe becomes the main light on the model while the image on the bottom is underexposed by about 1/2 a stop just to show some separation from the background so the strobe acts more as a fill light vs. a Main light. Photos were taken about 15 mins apart.
So I normally gravitate towards a slightly underexposed background....
As do I. She prefers the lighter of the two also. My preference is for a bit more dramatic look although in *this* case I think 1-1/2 stops was a bit much given the subject matter. She, the model, isn't a dramatic looking individual. She's a light skinned blond woman. Can people be, I don't know, 'dramatic' looking? Her personality fits the lighter of the two also.
