CTS V 6 piston calipers on a C5
 
Ok, so I've been searching everywhere trying to find a way to make these brakes work on our cars. I mean can you imagine having brembo 6 piston massive calipers for less than a quarter of what they would cost from brembo in the c5 set. Now, first off, does anybody know if the cts v calipers are different than the zr1 calipers? They look identical but I've never seen them side by side. There is a guy on the forum who already did the zr1 brake conversion w/ very little modifications, and no bracket needed. The standard c5 brembo calipers look very similar as well and they come w a bracket, I wonder if this would work, I know the conversion requires special brake lines, no problem I know where to get em. Obviously the whole point of going with the caddy brakes vs the zr1 is cost and I would like to use a C6 Z06 rotor instead of the $1800 a piece carbon ones. I've already priced the CTS V calipers at about $350 per caliper, and there are many options for the z06 rotors all reasonably cheap. It would really be an awesome find if we could make these work. They even mounted OE 18x9.5 c6 z06 replica's w/ c5 offsets( same wheels I have on my C5 Z) Just needed a .5" spacer

Hopefully others are interested in this set up as much as myself and can provide more info as to whether or not this is a possible upgrade ( well, anything is possible) and come up with some ideas on how to pull it off. So far I've eard the main problem is that the mounting holes line up but the caddy caliper is closer to the hub requiring the use of a 16.5" rotor, so why is this not the case for the CAMARO"s or the c5 using the ZR1 brakes, and if this is the case I wonder if the BREMBO bracket that comes w/ they're C5 kit would work.

I see you have done a great deal research on this. Idk if you found out though, C6Z brake calipers are 6 piston AND are made by brembo (same as the V calipers too)

The ZR1's calipers and rotors are made by brembo too!

Now a full set of C6Z brakes will run you about $1800

ZR1 calipers IMO are relatively cheap, those darn rotors though I'm sure you've seen are $1400 EACH!! Lol

Recently a company came out with Iron rotors for the ZR1 calipers that only weigh I think 22lbs ea. up front.

If I didn't have to up my front rims to 19" I'd do that swap instead of the C6Z's(ZR1 pad coverage is twice the amount of the C6Z)

IMO it would be more beneficial for you to grab a set of C6Z's at least :thumbs

True I did just notice that on the back and realized that while I was typing, but could have sworn someone told me they were still made by them. It was a hit or miss lol :cheers:. I know the ZR1's are made by brembo though

I've wondered about this also, but the C6Z rotors would be too small if the brake caliper offset is the same... the C6Z rotors are only 14".

According to Wikipedia the CTS-V rotors are 14.96" and the ZR1 rotors are 15.5", so I'd be looking at using the CTS-V rotors at a minimum. Something tells me, though, that the CTS-V hub holds the caliper 0.25" closer to the hub axis to account for the smaller disk. Measuring the clearance between the OD of the CTS-V disk to caliper and comparing it to the same measurement on the ZR1 is likely the only way to be sure. If this is the case and the pads overhang the disc's outer edge it may cause pad wear issues from uneven face pressure??? Or maybe it wouldn't matter at all?

Who's gonna order some parts and try it out? :)

I just read through that GMHTP article. Since C5 brakes are a direct bolt-on for 3rd gen Camaros I would think that the same setup they've done would work on the C5, no? I'd be interested to see someone using the actual 15" CTS-V rotors as well.

The ICING ON THE CAKE would be to find out if the brakes fit beneath C5Z rear wheels! I've seen the C6Z brakes used behind these wheels before...

Has anyone followed up on this upgrade.

These calipers are the same as the GT-3 calipers that I had on my 944t track car except the CTS-V calipers have ears.

The pads are huge AND you do not have to take the calipers off to change pads. This is important because most BBKs have calipers that have to be removed to change pads. (some Wilwood calipers still are top loaded) This is really important because every time you remove the caliper, which is aluminum or alloy, you pull a small amount of threads out of the caliper or adapter (unless the adapter is made of steel). Eventually they will fail.

This has been occurring on Porsche products since they stopped using top loading calipers.

Any way it would be a really nice upgrade over the C5 units.

The problem is what rotor would you use?

With the 4 piston CTS-v caliper you would need a 15.2in rotor. The 6 piston would require something even larger like 15.8in size.

I've also run stock c5 rotors, and C6 z51 brakes on both my firebird, and my C5 z06, before I put the CTS-V's on the bird.

You can't beat 14in brembo's for $600.

wait... as in C6 Z51 calipers on C5 rotors & brackets?
i'm pretty sure there's no difference there between that & stock C5 everything.

when i got back from deployment last summer, i installed C6 Z51 rotors & brackets on my C5 with the stock calipers

Sorry for the poor wording. I just swapped rotors and brackets. I ran f-body calipers on the f-body, and C5 calipers on the C5.

There is no difference in piston size between a front fbody or C5 or C6 caliper. They are different from a manufacturing standpoint though.

The rear calipers have different piston sizes, but I was talking strictly front.

Does anyone here have the ront and rear 4 pistion calipers and can test it with c5 stock 12" and 12.79 rotors? Just thinking if the rotors are to small so the brake pads don't get any overhang?

I don't see the huge savings here. Your looking at $1400 for 4 calipers. There is a kit for $1900 that has 4 C6 ZO6 calipers, rotors, stainless steel lines, and performance fluid. Direct bolt on kit with no guess work.:hide:

heres a kit for 1177 bucks. but then you also need rotors. it would med MUCH cheaper to go with 4 piston calipers if you really donīt need 6

So what parts did you use? To make these work? 4 piston 1st gen cts-v calipers? What kinda rotors exactly and how exactly does it all mount? Pad choices?

I hate the stock brakes on my c5 with z51 package.. i got stop tech performance pads... but it's still a whole lot of suck... for a 'supercar' it brakes like crap... and the pedal is like a marshmallow... I was gonna get HP+ pads to be more agressive and have better stopping power but opted for the stop tech pads... either way they fade with hot weather and a few higher triple digit stops...
