82 Vette ECM substitute
I was reading a SuperChevy article where they were able to replace the 82 ECM with a '90 Camaro ECM, so that it could be tune-able.
I also have a friend who has a '91 ECM, says it's out of a Camaro, and is willing to give it me free. Attached pic is the S/N of the '91 ECM. Will this work or not as a substitute? I thought it was worth asking.... https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...fa2b476f96.jpg |
Anything can be done question is how willing are you to mod your car and how far are you willing to go?

i am willing to splice and dice on the harness too. It has a 290 hp crate motor in it already so I don't think many changes will have much of an impact on value anyways... |
That's a TPI PCM. You need a TBI PCM. Basically, you have a split TBI on that engine -
each bore and injector is in a separate throttle body vs 2 in one throttle body. The simplest one to work with comes from the 88-91 trucks. 1227747 is the service number. This one will pretty much wire right in. A possible candidate for a more advanced one would be the 94-95 truck one with service number 16197427. The one the article talked about was probably from a TBI F-body car, service number 1228746. Very similar to the 1227747 with the main difference being an IAT sensor. HP Tuners will not handle anything pre-OBDII. But, there is a cheap (by donation) program called TunerPro that will allow you to tune it. Heck, you can even use an emulator and tune it real-time with the engine running. |
If your car is a 1982 and is still equipped with the crossfire injection system, you need to know that the major limiting factor in making additional power is the intake manifold.
Then again there is this... :D https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...ef3fb1f773.jpg http://www.eddiemotorsports.com/prod...old-msren-100/ Good luck... GUSTO |
Good info from Lionel.
I've got the 1227747 ECM under a layer of dust on the shelf waiting for time to wire it up to my '84. |

This is pretty much what they say too in the superchevy article...thanks....

Why an Ostrich with the EBL mod? The EBL converts it to a flash ECM.

Honestly, I would use a 1227747, HAM board, Ostrich and EBL and call it a day. That way you don't have to spice/hack the harness, just plug it in. Send your ECM to http://www.dynamicefi.com/ and they will do the entire install of components for you.

The Ostrich is the Emulator and I can do Real Time (R/T) via TunerPro R/T on the fly and I also have the first version vs. Ostrich 2.0 which is the newest and much smaller unit. However, doing an on-the-fly ECM update... The motor usually doesn't like it while updating and will burble the motor for a few seconds. I do dyno tuning anyway, so on-the-fly isn't done anymore anyway. You are correct about the 1228746 ECM, it has the IAT capability, but if you are not running an IAT or plan to, it's no better than the 7747. I run a 7747 currently, but had a 8746, but it died on me. |

Maybe a cam change MAYBE heads but doubt it. This one is kinda a budget build. But I already have the tuning software and experience (tuning my 98 Firebird), but hptuners says it will tune all the way back to 1990. i am willing to splice and dice on the harness too.
