More miles on the A8 and?

I was out today testing the ZR1 TB and normaly I like to just use drive. But today I was using the paddles and not sure if there was a change. But now I have instant shifts from the paddles.
The clic sound is still is the air and it has shifted bang very quick. I was hitting the paddles at 6500 and it was so quick I stayed at 6500 till it dropped till the next quick hit.

The thing was a blast had no idea the thing could hit a gear with the paddle that quick. No delay on the up shift!
Proud of the A8 right now!

racerx8 09-04-2018 08:52 PM

Nice! And the only change was to the ZR1 TB, nothing to the A8 tune?

saleen556 09-04-2018 09:06 PM

It’s not the full throttle shifts that are the problem. It’s the ones driving around at 3k and you want to drop a gear quick is the issue. Too much delay. Hopefully the C8 is DCT.

Agreed. Full throttle shifts sound and feel amazing while shifts during normal driving.... lack a sense of urgency.

What's the shift speed urgency, when just putting around at 3k or so? On a manual, who does bang-shifts at 3K rpm, other than a "play-racer"?

I have the Halltech intake installed coupled to the ZR1 95TB. Nothing to the tune! Wasn't sure the first drive or 2 but now after 300 miles or so and a drive this morning the beach. The thing hauls ass and I feel I got a nice gain from adding the 95mmTB.

If GM is smart, they will DEFINITELY put a DCT in a mid engine car. Because if they do some type of variant of the A8, they are going to be in full failure mode LOL

This A8 is pretty nice better than I thought it would be. Takes a while to learn it! When did you drive further than around the block?

Are guys you guys both not M7 owners. I am too but can say the A8 is not the dog it was in the C6. I thought the same way as you but I was all wrong my A8 downshifts quickly and up shifts super quick with paddles or in Drive
Much better than I thought and much better than you guys are thinking too

Yes I have the M7. However a friend has an auto Z06 and I’m not impressed with the transmission. He actually wishes it was an M7 but he got a great deal and compromised. After having my 16 M3 with the DCT it would annoy the hell out of me. When I want to change gears I don’t need a computer taking its time to tell me it’s okay.

Perfectly described, part throttle tells the car there is a lack of urgency.

Same here. I drove the A8, that's why i can testify to what i been complaining about. Obviously A8 owners will defend what they own. Same with M7 guys. And yes the A8 is "faster" in the 1/4 but that's really it. Oh and i'm sure auto is good in stop and go traffic as well lol.

But it can't upshift quick in ANY other times other than WOT. And downshifts are just non existent. Doesn't matter if you're clicking the downshift paddle in aggressive braking or just slowing down normally on your block, the downshifts are TERRIBLE.

After driving AMG's, hell even a VW has DCT's, you really shake your head that why GM couldn't put a dual clutch at LEAST in the ZR1. It's a performance car, shouldn't it have a proper trans?

What year does he have? Like I said you really don't know till you drive a few thousand miles on the car. IMO Even an hour drive doesn't clue you in on how to drive for one thing.
Mine shifts quickly even at part throttle much improved over what you are thinking. 16 M3 loses by a country mile to this car! Would not want one after the Z06. I had one!

Another one off base! I would let you drive mine nothing like you are saying and are falsely complaining about! Bet you haven't drive one lately or very far. I didn't even think this way till after I drove a lot more. First few times not real impressed but once you figure it out it is pretty slick!

I’m about to pull the trigger on a M7... can you elaborate on what you figured out - like what made you change from not real impressed to pretty slick?

Go to the dealer and drive an A8 FIRST. Pretty confident you'll go home in the M7.

Asking that guy his opinion is basically allowing him to make your decision. Because if you don't do or buy or install EVERYTHING HE'S DONE AND INSTALLED, then you are 100% wrong. It's either his way, his experience, or it never happened nor it can never happen. He lives in his own world.

The A8 is fast. But the paddles are useless (especially for competitive driving) and A8 owners will even admit in order to not overheat, you just leave it in D and not use the paddles. What fun is this auto if you can't even use the paddles? lol

The downshifts are terrible, that is fact. There is no mod, video, nor testimonial that will prove otherwise. The A8 CAN NOT downshift fast. It downshifts like a person who is driving a manual downshifts without heel and toe'ing and using the engine to slow the car down. You know what i mean. That's how slow and sluggish the downshifts are.

Other than that, the A8 is good in traffic though lol

I have the M7 and it is my first choice but it is not a case of A8 vs M7. It is M7 or A8. Good choice! That said I'm getting a 2019 M7 too to replace my 2015 M7.
So soon it will be the 17 A8 and the 19 M7 both modded to the 800-850 hp range. Sometimes you feel like the M7. Sometimes the A8 is the better choice.

Now getting back to your question. The A8 goes from not too impressed to pretty slick on it's own. The more you drive takes more than around the block. Takes quite a few times diving it before you figure it out then it alsgno figures out your driving as well. If you want a quick gear drop you simply put the pedal down and when it comes up it is in the right gear then you go.
The paddles at full tilt are not like I thought either. when know it does good in drive but the paddles are not the touch, Mississippi ,shift I thought.
The thing clic's and it has shifted before the clic sound is gone BANG, BANG.

You have it backwards. It's leaving in in drive that causes the engine to maintain unnecessarily high revs, contributing to overheating. Paddle shifting is recommended on the track to keep the heat down.

lol of course. That's why I said it.

when i was c7 shopping I actually was going to do a deal for a grand sport. But when I got there, only auto grand sports. I was like wtf. This sucks.

2 hours later drove home in a manual z06 lol. That was the best day i had in recent years lol.

cant wait to do the same for the c8. Well if theres a dual clutch I'll be driving home in a dual clutch lol. If not, then I hope for manual!
