2003 6spd coupe : na build turns FI

i bought my 2003 coupe 5 years ago and 3 years ago decided on a na build. The following year I added ported intake and bigger headers. Loved it for the last two years but decided to make a big change along with some upgrades and maintenance. Next month Im having A&A supercharger installed along with clutch, shocks and brakes. Here are my current mods and curious what to expect power wise.

226/228 .600/.600 114, PrC stage 2.5 6.0L heads, ARH 1 7/8” no cats, Corsa sport catback

I honestly don’t want much more than 550rwhp because I’d like things to not break. I know I’ll need to break in the clutch before dynoing the new set up but I will ask my tuner to dial it back to be as safe as possible. However, curious what some of you think I could put down with the A&A along with current mods. I don’t really understand how big headers and the cam and 317’s affect or add to the power, but I know they probably will make good power with the added supercharger .... will these mods affect the boost level or do they just flow better resulting in more power? Still trying to learn about all this stuff since I’m taking the plunge. Already paid the deposit so it’s for sure going to happen!!

you're probably making low to mid 400s with your current mods?... and you only want 550, that might be like 4 or 5psi not a whole lot really... since your car is decently modded already it will respond to boost much better than a stock car so you're gonna have to slow the blower down if you don't want to make a lot more

Yes sir, dynod 433/396 with current mods (includes ported FAST 90/90). Without the FAST and with 1 3/4 headers and cats (instead of current 1 7/8 headers catless) it dynod 406/370. I am not going to use the FAST with supercharger, going to put the LS6 intake back on when A&A goes on!

I originally started talking to my tuner about swapping heads with AFR or TF to aim for 460rwhp/420tq. Someone then told me if I’m not happy with 430 I probably won’t be happy with 460 either so instead of spending a bunch and being disappointed I really should just supercharge it. Yes it’s a few thousand $$ more but the gains will be undeniable..... so here we are! I’m committed now but definitely a little nervous about having that much power but super stoked about it also ;)

Do you think they can tune it back to 550rwhp or am I just going to have to learn how to modulate my right foot and shift with less aggression than I do now? I guess I’m heading down that rabbit hole and will probably need to upgrade differential, axles and transmission in the future.
From the research I’m doing it looks like 7psi is normal with the basic A&A pully so unless I got a bigger pully (probably special order) I’ll need to just be careful and learn how to drive it again. I could be wrong, I’m just a total newbie when it comes to Forced Induction so trying to learn. I wish there was a switch on the supercharger where I could set psi to desired level (5 for example) but pretty sure that’s not how it works.....lol.
Basically this is all I can think about all day long, drives me nuts but also gets me excited. Thanks for the info, really appreciate it!!!

Welcome to the club! And yes BOOST is ADDICTIVE! :smash:

I didnt start breaking drivetrain parts until I was at 600+rwhp on my 2002 convertible with a ProCharger D1SC, however on my 2000 FRC I broke the factory rear with almost stock level horsepower!

It really depends on how you drive it and a bit of luck. I would budget for an upgraded transmission and possibly rear in the future. Call Jeremy from RPM Transmissions and he'll know exactly what you need and what's best bang for the buck.

(Later will come the forged bottom end and smaller pulley! :steering:)

Conservative boost, conservative timing, short shift it a hair and mind your right foot. Start saving a little cash on the side for future upgrades. I prefer to sell parts before I destroy them so upgrading isn’t so bad, but that rarely happens.. LOL

My stock 2002 vert engine except for shorties with 8 psi boost A&A kit dyoed 537 rwhp and 483 ft/lb of torque.

That was before the long tubes and smaller pulley.
The long tubes with the 3.6 dropped the boost to 6 and the 3.4 pulley brought it back up to 8 psi.
I put a McLeod RXT dual disc clutch as the stock one the pedal sat on the floor for a minute
after WOT blasts which got worse after the long tubes and the flywheel was blue in places.

I do miss IPS, but it did start going downhill. Glad Mark opened his own shop. Are you from the Cbus area?

Being that you had it tuned in 13, I assume Eric tuned the car then?

No I'm not but they were closer to Buffalo than ECS and were a forum vendor at the time.
I put the kit on 2 months after I bought the car.
I don't know their names but the tune is great even not in boost.
Feels like a bike.
I relocated the rad back to the stock location by redoing the cradle.
I also recirculated the BOV into the intake to get rid of the tshing noise I hated.

2 weeks from today it goes in! Any last minute additions I should consider? I don’t drag race or track it at this point, mostly just cruise around on nice weekends and sometimes with a few friends. I have brand new tires on it and a fresh oil change - it’s getting a Centerforce Dyad clutch, Bilstein shocks, rotors and pads all around, new BTR .660 springs and titanium retainers, new torque tube couplers if needed and of course the A&A supercharger kit plus gauges!

There will be some clutch break in miles so I won’t be really testing the new power for a while but I can’t wait ;)

Do the rad cradle mod by moving the perches down
and get an extra inch of ground clearance.

ECS Trans brace.
I had some wheel hop.
Also added a trans mount.

Also

I recirculated the BOV into the intake because I couldn't stand the constant tshing noise on every shift
Shift tsh, shift tsh :ack:
Now it's just a little chirp I only hear occasionally.

Time for a C-5 10-23-2018 10:18 PM

I enjoy my N/A set-up and always said I'd leave well enough alone. Been thinking about an A&A. In for results. There's nothing free about this free forum...

Wow, you’ve done a lot of cool stuff and fabrications. I have thought about the diff and tranny brace, although was thinking it’s more for drag racers and hard launches. I’ll ask the shop if they suggest it.
Headers for sure, I have ARH 1 7/8” with catless x pipe so all good on that front!

I did not plan ever to go supercharger either, started heads and cam then added Fast 90 and love the sound and power but I guess I got used to it - or used to getting whooped by bolt-on C6’s that I decided it’s time for supercharger!!!
I am nervous about breaking stuff but plan to be very cautious and get used to the added power before going crazy!

itsslow98 10-23-2018 11:01 PM

I was in the same boat. Spent a shit ton on the best n/a sbe build I could do. Made 477 with a modest cam.

it wasn't t enough so I added an a&a kit. My compression is high 11.45 so I went with the 3.8 pulley and I kept my 10% underdrive which netted 7.8psi. This translated into 655rwhp, +178rwhp on 7.8psi. I did add meth for added safety because of the high comp. Car rips now.

what are your heads milled to?

Rlb2002vette 10-24-2018 12:10 AM

I'm savin my money, to play with the KOOL KIDS that run SUPERCHARGERS in Kognito under their HOODS. I'm a retired union elevator man, that is disabled, but the best time of my day, is going for my daily ride in my in my vette. Love life, and enjoy every day, it might be your last day. (Old Man Advise) One day that young fellar in Texas, that goes by the name of Bret is gonna fix me up with a Supercharger and a tune that I can have some "Spirited" driving with. just my $.02 cents

im not sure what heads are Milled to, the shop doing the work is going to check compression but I’m thinking it’s 9.6-10.1 or somewhere in this range with my ported 317 heads

blackmachdown 10-29-2018 11:38 AM

Who is doing the work?

if you told a&A this was a high altitude car you are going to be sent a smaller pulley to make up for the loss of psi at our altitude. Look at posts by tommypenguin he was a CO vette owner who has a ported head lumpy cam, and fast intake car for an idea of where you will be. Second with your h/c set up you will lose psi but it won’t come with a power loss. Remember boost is a measurement against restriction. If your set up flows better than stock then there will not be as much of bottle neck resulting in less psi.

Things you will need to consider, bigger fuel system to handle the power, pin the factory crank, thicker radiator. That should cover you, I think you will sit around 575 hp with 8 psi

ysb02 10-29-2018 04:37 PM

You should be fine up to 700 rwhp or so. The mainshaft is probably the weakest link of the drivetrain beyond the clutch. I’ve seen those go out from someone launching hard at the track with 450 rwhp tho. With the higher cr you might want to just spray one nozzle of meth at upper rpms.
