rose jointed rear strut rods

Hi all,

My 68 has aftermarket 'heavy duty' type rose jointed strut rods.

The drivers side is driving me slightly nuts as it rattles like a bunch of tin cans being dragged behind the car...

I can see its a 5/8th UNF male ended rose joint running into the strut - but can anyone confirm what the internal diameter of the spherical bearing should be (where it slips over the shock mounting fixture (don't know the proper name, sorry!)

it's a standard c3 shock mounting bit - so i'm hopeful someone out there can tell me what the diameter is at the point where the strut mounts...

Many thanks in advance for thoughts!

David

(P.S; yes - I could pull it off and measure it.... but if it's possible, i'd rather keep the car together for another few weeks before decommissioning for the winter.... this is a winter job, that i'm just trying to get the bits for ahead of time! :) )

5/8” diameter for the shock mount
1/2” for the in board (strut rod bracket) end
If one is going out you might want to think about changing them all.

Apologies Roger.. I missed your post. Pic below.

I sprayed some lithium grease into the rose joints.. which made it quiet for about 5 minutes.. then it started squeeking again!

shocks have about 400 miles on them, so it definitely should not be them!

Rose joint AKA Heim joint-

Here's a good thread on strut rods using heim joints-

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...heim-ends.html

However- most of them I have seen are not greaseable- then end up wearing out and squeaking-

I ended up with greasable moly heim joints- I used staggered sizes- 5/8" to 1/2" hole for the bracket- no misalignment spacers needed- just cone spacers and a couple of thick washers- and it a nice tight fit. Used 3/8" flat steel to keep them centered. Using a 4" greade 8 bolt and a nyloc bolt.
I can get the info on them if interested.

Greaseable Super Strong Alloy Heim joints are available from Aurora..........Allstar Performance in MI carries a full line of these joints.

There's a product called "seals-it", that you can use, to keep the Heim joints clean. They're rubber seals that are bonded to a flat washer, and you use them as "covers" for the joints. I believe their website is seals-it.com, or something like that.

Have used these below ...to keep rear-end grease from loading up right side in circletracker w/ 9" ford floater. Helps keep lube in the hogshead & not up in tube. Works well. I've seen them used in quickchange as well. I'm now remembering the late Rudy Branham (racer) as he gave me some when we were in a pinch...bless him.

That's the company I was referring to. The seals that work with the Heim ends are known as "rod end seals".

Hi Chaps,

What sort of tolerance is acceptable on these?

I've got the new joints - but test fitting them shows a 0.5mm (.02 ") tolerance.. it feels relatively loose on the mount? Is this normal, or ?

thanks for thoughts!
