Interior work on my '74

Spent the rainy/windy weekend tearing apart the interior of m '74... what initially started as "replacing the bulbs in my dash and my door lock" quickly became tearing apart the entire interior...

Apparently you can use electrical tape to hold the seat belt apparatus together! My wife was so happy to see this reinforcement.....

Speakers practically turned to dust when I touched them... Good thing I have replacements...

Kick panel rust... acceptable or not?

Naked dash... super intimidating... I can't look too closely yet. Just gonna take it one step at a time....

Cargo compartment... weeeeee!!!

Anyway... That's where I stand right now. Painted some of the plastic and metal black. Will dye the vinyl black when it warms up a bit. Ordered some black carpet with deadner for the front and rear...

Still need to get a new seat belt set, actually replace the bulbs with LEDs, wire the new sound system, clean and lube the parts that need cleaning an lubing, and then put it all back together...

Thanks for looking and making it this far! Hope the pictures aren't too big... they seem huge... :-/

When I took out the carpet there was a lot of moisture under there.... I'm guessing I have a sneaky leak somewhere...

My '74 looked just like that, when I got it. The dash harness (from here) doesn't look to bad either. As far as the dash, that will be the hardest part of putting it together! Feel free to ask questions, I have, lots and lots of photos of the power window innards, dash, engine bay, etc, etc.

Wow that brings back memories. I did that to my 75. New carpet, seat leather, bulbs, clock replacement etc.

I'm not sure I could do that again.

F22 - Thanks! I will appreciate the help.

Aerovette - Yeah, I'm pretty much doing everything except buying new vinyl. I have my new seats, and brackets are on order. I am fortunate that my clock works already ;-)

The clock works? Wow, that's the first time, I've ever heard of the clock, actually working on one of these cars!

That is a big undertaking. Good Luck

Hahaha I know. I was totally expecting it not to work when I was looking for my car. Not sure if the PO replaced it or not but I't been working since I got it. Honestly , the clock is the only reason I haven't installed a battery disconnect... :-D

Oh! I was also excited to find my T-Top trunk straps tucked away in a corner under the carpet...

Anyone know where I can find the sliding plates that go at the base of the... shift lever?... for an automatic?

Try Paragon Corvette.

Found some on Zip. Couldn't find any on Willcox.

Looks like a fun project! I recently finished an interior refresh on mine - dash pad, speakers/head unit, console, gauge bezels, seam foam and leather seat covers.

Keep at it, it will be worth it!

The clock in my '74 works just fine. Bought it in 1977 (second owner). It keeps perfect time. Living in Wisconsin I store it for 6 months (mid October to mid April); remove the battery during storage. When I install the battery and connect the terminals in the Spring the clock starts right up. Never had a problem with it in the 41 years I've owned the car. I suppose now that I've talked about, the clock will crap out this Spring! LOL

Hahahahaha Isn't that always the way it works?

74Ken 01-08-2019 11:45 AM

That looks like my 74 did for a hole year. Never did that before on any car.

Just an FYI, if I had to do it again I would replace the bulb sockets on the dash with ones from a newer year. Those 74 sockets kept popping out every time I tried to put the dash back in with the LED bulbs. I must have tried 10 times, will never go thru that again.
And don't tap into that grey light wire for the radio lights. The circuit can't handle it. Kept blowing my fuse every time I put the dash lights on.

I did everything you are going to do to yours. so if you have any questions, ask away.

I also found that my PO did not put the support bracket back under the rear console when he replaced it. I cracked it the first time I leaned on it.

I have plans for an 8" sub box in the jack compartment if you need them.

enjoy, this was the fun part for me.;

Awesome! Thanks for the advice. It's been really windy and rainy here so I had to put a hold on the project for a couple days :-( I'm waiting on a couple shipments from Willcox anyway so I'm not in any huge rush. I'll post more as I get some of the work done.

Moved to a thread with a broader subject.
