69 Seatbelt Carpet Grommet Location/Installation Help
 

Hi,
I need some help in determining where the carpet seatbelt grommets are located (1969). My attempt was simply to locate them over the steel thru bracket that the seatbelt comes up through but I wanted to see if anyone has in guidance on the best way to install them. Pictures would be a great help! Thanks!

The picture above is of my 69 roadster. The car was built Jan 13 1969 and that is the factory installation/original carpet. The placement of the grommets can vary a little in one direction or the other from the few I've observed.

Are you reinstalling the original hard plastic pieces or are those the rubber reproductions? The originals were attached to the carpet under the flap with heavy duty staples. I worked with the rubber replacements and had to use a silicone to keep them in place. I don't like the repros.

They're the rubber repops. Though the old carpet was original, it was missing the grommets. If you zoom in you can see how mine came out. It looks okay. I slowly made my cuts until it fit. They don't fall out or anything. I may put a dab of glue in there but we'll see how they work. :rock:

Has anyone bought a repop set that they would recommend? My interior is bright blue so I can only assume I will have to paint/dye them?

Mine doesn't have them.... built in June.

The pic of the blue original interior is very helpful as now I know why some of the originals I have seen have one
corner cut off. That must have been done to fit the grommet under the trim molding.

Okay guys.. I'm out of town and a bit bored... so I'll interject in this.

The original grommets were a hard plastic, the reproductions are in soft rubber... So the only way to install these in the proper manner is to to put a wooden block on the backside, and staple the grommet. Once you staple the grommet to through the carpet you pull the wooden board and then bend the staples over. We use a pneumatic Fasco stapler to do this.... but if you lift the lip you can use any type that you have.

The original grommets were made from a hard plastic, the reproductions are soft.. So the only way to make these things look correct is to staple the hell out of them (under the lip).

VERY helpful and MUCH appreciated! Two questions though...

1. Do you spray paint (maybe dye) the correct color on...Anyone done this?
2. Do you insert those grommets before installing the carpet.(maybe a dry fit, then pull the wood out, bend the staples over, then adhesive the carpet in)?

You can dye them any color needed, but I'd only install them into the carpet after the front floor board carpet is installed. If you do it this way you'll know where they belong, if you try to pre-install them I'd guess you might have an issue. We just flip up the outer top lip, shoot the staples into wood, then pull the wood and bend them over. You can use any type of soft wood, typically a cut off section of 2 x 4 will work just fine since it's usually white pine and soft.

I guess I didn't see the question... We did a very early 68 and I don't believe that car had them. I have pics at my office I'll take a look.

You might want to go to the NCRS board and ask them too.

I should have an answer for this tomorrow morning. I'm heading out but I put the computer in search mode for the 68 early files which should tell us if the grommet was there on yours.

Okay... I took a look at the pictures tonight and yes, the early 68 had the grommets in the carpet so I'd have to dig out the s/n on this but this was a very early car with the double part header corners... I'll keep the pictures on my screen and can maybe post some of them later if needed... But Marshal, I'd have to say yes.... I know this car was built before your build date.

Adam, my late March (26th), 1968 coupe had red one's on my red carpeting. Lou.

So, taking out the carpets I discovered that one of these pieces has a rubber covered top. It appears to have been painted at some point but as you can see, is not even present on the other...

I don't see this covering in any of the catalogs...thinking of just dipping it in Grip Dip or something similar. Any thoughts?

Those braces are normal for the 68 car... blast them, treat them with anti corrosion primer and paint... I've got a few pictures of those as well.. they were the belt guides that covered the re tractor and guided the belt to the grommet.
