2009 c6 zo6 engine disaster. 72,000 miles
Need feedback please! Car is at Reliable Chevrolet Richardson Texas. Gmepp representative is on the way. I have the platinum plan. Zero deductible. According to the dealership a lifter(s) went bad and the cam is damaged. The car has been meticulously maintained. This is my third extended warranty. Absolutely no modifications. Never been tracked/raced. What am I looking at? What should I expect? Thank you forum. |
If it is under warranty with GMPP, you should basically expect a new motor, depending on the amount of damage. They need to see the extent of the cam damage and how much metal it spit into the motor.

I too am in Dallas and am familiar with Reliable. Not for the reasons you are.
I am with Unreal... You should demand a complete Long block. The likely culprit was the cam itself w the soft lobes which in turn caused the lifter(s) to fail. It is pretty common. Do not be passive on this. Reliable is going to attempt to nickel and dime you, kinda like an insurance company when they are negotiating. Depending on how Warranty reads YOU are in the drivers seat. If need be have a 3rd party go in and explain the whole soft lobe thing. The ONLY ding that I can see is the mileage. Tell them you want to see the cam lobes and failed lifters. It will certainly tell the story. Just my .02 |

Did they actually open up the engine to determine that? When my engine blew, the dealership did basically 0 to diagnose it properly. This led to a 100% wrong diagnosis. You should ask them if they tore down the car properly, and I don't mean just popping the hood and looking in.

Also request new oil lines and dry sump to be removed and cleaned.

Fairly common if the diagnosis is correct...probably the second most common failure after the excessive guide wear issues. You'll most likely require a new engine if the damage is extensive enough; which will also require new oil cooler and lines, and I would push for new sump and lines...but as mentioned above, the sump itself can be disassembled and cleaned.

Dealer shouldn't fight you, as it is just money in their pocket. If anything they should be on your side trying to milk as much money out of GMPP as possible.
Cam/lifter failure and rod failure are definately battling it out for the #2 most common failure to take these motors out after guides/valves. |
Good thing you got the extended warranty. But it would have been cheaper to fix the valves/heads. Staying with the original heads/valves with that mileage is a big risk. But now it looks like a new engine for the car, which will have a lot less miles on it.

Once again it happens and GM tries to wiggle out! If you loose go to your state DMV and let them know your situation and let this forum no your out come. If you think GM have problems now you should have been buying there shit in 89 i had two Chevrolets fail and i ate the repairs.

The OP's biggest challenge at this point is if they push to just replace the cam and failed lifter(s) and nothing more, along with the standard stealership crappy service depertment behavior like cracking the fenders, greasing up the interior, forgetting to refill the trans if they replace the engine, not replacing or properly cleaning the tank and lines, etc. :cheers: |

If the GMEPP people are smart they will replace the motor. If they just fix the broken parts there is still 2 years and 10 months left on the warranty so they can get hit again. A new motor I believe comes with a 3 year 36k mile warranty. They would not have to worry about any future big hits. That is what I would do. You get what you pay for. |
