Holley Hydramat with 80-82 sending unit tank? LS Swap

I'm dealing with a problem on my LS3 swap. I can watch my gauge drop a whole 1/4 tank under 1/2+ throttle. With only about 1/4 tank left the motor will actually cut out with a hard launch or dropping a gear. See video below. My car is a 79 and I'm running a 80-82 sending unit with a higher psi pump.

It looks like (from a picture pauldana posted) the 80-82 sending unit/pumps sit at the front bottom of the tank. I'm leaning toward the holley hydramat 16-102 in order to get the mat to the back of the tank, but it won't help me out much with side to side corners. A new baffled tank is an option if someone makes one.

Is anyone running a similar setup with a hydramat that can tell me what's worked and what hasn't?

The thread above is the one you are referencing... the hydromat has proven to be amazing// no matter how many G's I pull in very long corners, nor matter the acceleration or the amount of fuel... it finds it and sucks it up...
great product...

here are a few pictures from that thread.... more pictures there... and yes, I used a 80-82 sending unit to modify.. it has larger return lines to the tank as well which I use for the return for the FAST EFI.

Remember, the tank is sloped to the front, it is not level. All gas will find it way forward. not to the back.

We also added 2 baffles on each side of the pump.. you can see the one in the picture in the background pf the pump, when we closed it up the other one was place on the other side of the pump
Also an according baffle was added to keep the fuel from sloshing to fast to the back on hard acceleration.
Hey...but what do I know.. someone said we dont build things... lol//

Hey Ryan-

I had the Aeromotive Phantom- baffle and foam. After letting gas sit in my tank for less than two years- it ATE the foam. I couldn't believe it- pump gas with NO additive.

Looked at everything out there to replace the foam- there was no way I was going to put something that could dissolve and leave a big mess.

I talked to the guys at Holley and Aeromotive about what happened and decided to go with the hydramat.

I redid the filler and mounted the tank at an angle- which should keep the fuel around the hydramat.

A test run of the pump- worked great-sucked every ounce of fuel out of the tank. I'm also running a return system.

I gotta say the hydromat looks like the ticket and worth the $150

Pauldana,

I didn't realize the tank slopped toward the front. Which is probably why it wouldn't always do it just rolling into the throttle.

I'm thinking if I went with a hydramat similar to yours and richard454's I may still have an issue under wot since I don't have any baffles in the tank. I know it might be pointless under normal conditions but the cross style 16-102 looks like it'd catch front to back sloshing.

There is enough of a slop on it when installed that unless you are under a gallon, I do not see that as a problem.
also, you may not have your current pickup down far enough into the front troff, maybe something came loos or????
My son Chris did the baffling in the tank for me. Its main purpose was to stop hard slosh in the tank for better road race character as not have 160+ pounds of weight wapping from one side to the other in the turns. and on hard acceleration. The gas does move but at a much slower rate.
You can not do this on your stock tank, as it is plastic with a thin aluminum outer shell. The aftermarket replacement tanks are steel, which is easy to work with and modify.

ps... I gave the some some thought, but had heard stories like Richards. And the foam also eats up a gallon or more of room from your tank, my understanding....
Also, the foam can get in the way of your pickup for your fuel level float, and you have to secure the foam somehow or to will slosh as well...
So, no foam for me... jmho

I'll have to double check exactly where the pump is sitting. I know i didn't check or adjust anything when i dropped it in. Nothing has fallen off or come apart, i pulled it out to double check the other night. I do like what you and your son did. I'll have to do something similar if i ever get another tank!

Thanks to you and richard for the help, I'll have to go order a mat and see what it does.

That Holley mat sounds pretty cool. I may have done that if it was available years ago when I put my EFI in.

You can also try a Cannister-type pump assembly where where the fuel return from the engine comes into a reservoir such that you never lose suction. When I installed mine I actually ran it dry to see where I would lose suction..... I coordinated with a friend of mine and I did not have more than 12 ounces (less than a soda can equivalent) by the time I ran out of gas. Something to consider if the mat does not work for you. (I had some pics, but I cannot seem to find my albums?)

Sorry just getting back to this. I'm waiting to finish up ac stuff because classic auto hasn't turned my phone call.

Ok, the pump I'm using doesn't have threads on the end. The pump sock fits right over inlet and has little teeth that dig into the plstic opening/inlet. What fitting can i use to connect the pump to the 3/8" fnpt connection from holley? I'm guessing 3/8" mnpt to barb fitting with hose but then I'm not sure how to connect hose to the plastic inlet of my pump (which looks just like the factory 80-82 pump).

Thanks for any advice.

Which Hyromat did you get? There is one that directly fits onto that style of pump. I have no idea how you could convert that pump to a NPT or AN fitting for any of the other mat sizes though.

I was looking at #16-102 which has a 3/8"npt fitting. The one that you're referring to, is that #16-111 that has the 11MM Outlet w/6 Lock Pin Position connector? If so then I guess that's the one I'll have to go with or order a new fuel pump and modify how it mounts on the factory sending unit.

You want to get the hydramat that matches the outlet on your pump.

I'm going with the same solution as you: 82 sending unit in a 79 tank w Holley hydramat; no baffles. Mine is installed again with new fuel lines, but my engine is torn down to a bare block so you'll probably beat me to testing it.

I'm excited to see what you learn.

Call Chris @ EFISystemPro.com -he also works @ Walbropumps.com or some similar named site. He's figured out what hydramat goes with which pump and has a list. (He helped me get it right.)

Thanks for the info.....i emailed holley and we will see what they respond with. If not then I'll gouge your guy a call. I'm sure there's a way.

bluegtp 02-12-2019 09:39 PM

Here's what holley resonded with.....looks like I'm out of a fitting type option. I'll still have to make a few other phone calls i guess.

"Hello Ryan, thanks for contacting Holley Tech Support:
Unfortunately I do not have anything that will work with the connector on your pump. The 6 pin connector I could best describe as a sunflower shape with plastic hooks.
You may be able to clamp a piece of EFI rated hose onto your pump and at that point simply get a hose barb fitting/adapter to the hydramat.
Best Regards.

Your Question Was:
I''m wanting to use a hydramat (#16-102) with my stock replacement fuel pump to supply fuel to my LS3/525 swapped motor. The inlet side of the pump is plastic with a screen inside and it has a sock with a metal ring that clips onto the plastic inlet of the pump. I''m not familiar with options to connect to this style pump since it doesn''t have npt fitting on the inlet. Can you provide some direction on what kind of fitting is required to run a hydramat or to get me to npt.
I also see on the #16-111 there is a 6-pin type connector, will this connector work with my pump?
See link below for a photo of the inlet side of my pump.

Thanks for any help provided,
Ryan"

Have you considered adding a Surge Tank? It would fix any fuel starvation issues under high g.

That was my choice as well. Do lose the spare tire in the place I chose to install it. There may be other places to install one however.

I posted on other threads but for when someone finds this one in a search..

I think this is the best / cheapest option for no fuel starvation.
