Under seat subwoofer

I've been searching for a day or two and can't seem to find a clear answer. Has anyone stuffed an under seat subwoofer under either seat in a C5?

I'm not looking to shake the car next to me at all as I'm in the sensible and reliable decade of my life (40's). I just simply want a quality sound similar to a nice modern oem stereo system.

I'm currently gathering the items to update my technology. A Sony xav-xa100, keeping the Bose system with the adapter (name escapes me as I sit in a dentist office waiting room, but not the PAC oem deal), and updating the twiddlers with JBL GX series speakers.

Anyone have thoughts?

No idea to be honest, but I doubt there's enough room. The seats are pretty low profile. Most drop a sub box into the rear center tub.

There is no room under the seat for a sub of any kind.

No room under seat.
I suggest either drop a 8-10" in the well in back (boxes, subs pretty cheap). This does require running cables, amp etc.

Or I had this unit in a previous car:

Simple, cheap, amazingly good sound quality. Deep and tight, not boomy.

If you want to go down the rabbit hole a little, consider a head-unit-less system

I did this a few months back and it is fully awesome. Simple, effective, slick!!

Thanks for the input gentlemen. I'll dig around on the links and see what you guys did. I absolutely hate breaching the firewall with huge power cables, etc. Did that shit 20 years ago and refuse to go back! Haha

That's a cool setup! An iPad mini would be cool as hell with that design.

Well done!

I hear that. Am in the same boat. Been there, done that.
Vette is easy to run power though; batt is up against passenger side firewall and there's a huge rubber grommet there for the factory wiring. Already all done for you. good luck!

:iagree: No way, no how. How tall are you? If you are on the short side you might be able to squeeze a subwoofer behind the seat, something like member acroy suggested.
I would recommend a subwoofer in the rear center compartment. So far I've had a 10" Infinity sub with 300 watts rms back there and it pounded. Then I upgraded to a 12" MTX shallow subwoofer with 500 watts rms, wasn't too impressed but that sub would not blow no matter how hard I tried. Those were in my 98. In my 99 I have a JL Audio 13.5" sub with 500 watts rms and I'm seriously disappointed with it considering the price ($600). That cheap ($80) Infinity sounded better and was louder with less wattage.
I have a box you can have for $10, you pay shipping and handling. It's over a $100 value (grille alone was like $35)

Got to go with the majority here - there just isn't much room under the seats for adding anything.

I was monkeying around with ideas while putting the rack back in after replacing the balancer due to the dreaded pulley wobble, and I may slide the thinnest under seat sub I can find behind the passenger seat.....MAYBE. I put in a divider to lower some of the abnoxious road noise so laying a sub back in the trunk I feel like is going to need some mega wattage and lead to sounding like a 20 year old punk cruising in a ricer while I pull down the mean streets that is my suburban culdesac. I refuse to be that guy! Lol.

Thanks a ton for offering the sub box! As this progresses I may reach out and take it off your hands! I will see how the head unit and twiddlers replacement sounds and move up from there.

You would probably struggle to get the amps under there.

This is what I have in the rear compartment -- I am still using the orig head unit but along with the speaker upgrade it sounds great. Ran me about 600.00 with the install but was worth it. You might be able to set this behind the pass seat or better yet, set it in the rear comp. I have one of these in my Outback and it sounds really good for what it is.

That's the exact unit I have been eyeballing. So you're happy with that sub you linked? And quality concerns or longevity issues?

I'm not looking to rattle mirrors, and have sealed off my trunk as much as possible due to road noise so throwing a sub back there is asking for too much bass. I'm thinking it may go behind the passenger seat nicely..... And hell after the new head unit and speakers it may be just dandy.

StrangelovesM6Vert 02-28-2019 10:35 AM

I have these 2 1/8" x 8" SWS replacements for BMW oem under seat subs I mounted in slices of Home Depot paper construction tubes under the seats in my Grand Cherokee

You could put them behind the seats.

I haven't had any issues at all with the Rockville sub. If you change out the head unit of the Vette the install would be easy as most, if not all aftermarket units, have a "sub out" that simplifies the hook up. The controls on the sub make it easy to dial in the right levels as well. If room for the sub behind the seat is tight they have an 8" that sounds good too.( (I have one in my 2000 Rav4). Bass is not quite as deep but it is a bit tighter and uses less space. Either one would make a big impact on the overall sound.

Just wanted to update this thread and let everyone know it is completely possible to get an underseat subwoofer installed under the passenger seat.

The cerwin-vega vpas10 is the perfect size, allows the seat to slide as designed, and offers up some much needed low end clarity with no ridiculous hood rat bass thumping shit that can be heard by others at a stop light. Install was easy, and fine tuning resulted in the low pass filter set at the lowest setting, gain at about 25%, and the stereo subwoofer output at -5%.

It's exactly what I needed, and if you have a lady in the car....well....who knows.
