Daytona Sensors CD-1 and Crane distributor setup
 

So...my local buddy Bill Van Orman turned me onto this setup which he has on his 502.

Do any of you use the Daytona Sensors CD-1 ignition system?

Bill has his hooked up to a Crane optical triggered distributor.

He can adjust retard for startup.
And he can use a laptop for setup.

Questions......
Do any of you use this in conjunction with any of the EFI setups on the market now like Holley's Sniper, Fi Tech, Edelbrock Pro-Flo, etc...???
Reason I ask is the Daytona system is programmable and the EFI systems(depending upon which one) are self-learning.

Neither of the systems will be cheap in the end.
Just trying to figure which match up best.

Bill is running carb on his setup. Which I could do also as I have a Victor Jr intake and 2 Holley carbs to choose from.

Locked advance ignition is not good for a wide range of rpm motor. IE street machines

For about the same money you can do a coil on plug conversion... Just sayin.

Somebody bought out crane electronics. But Crane made a wonderful digital dizzy with dials to set the amount of total advance. when the full advance is all in, and the amounts of additional vacuum advance. It was better than the MSD E-tech because of the choices. Crane also made really nice multi spark digital sequential rev limiter. then of course the nice coils. That is what I use along with Taylor Pro wires

OK...are you saying the Daytona Sensors stuff is not good for a street engine...??

Actually I picked that piece up on ebay for $179 rebuilt by Crane.

I went this route as Bill liked it for his 502 and has his dyno guys run that setup.

So...George....give me your suggestion what to use for the street assuming I incorporate the Crane distributor.
You are right about Crane's electronics division being sold. A company called FAST owns that division. They kept the Crane part numbers but changed the name.

Like I said in George's reply, I picked up the Crane distributor online for only $179. I figured with the Daytona system I could add that for about $600. Total under $800. I already have a tablet to set it up and monitor it with.
Bill gave me good info back in December so that's how I ended heading this direction.

Of course, anyone with some hands on suggestions is greatly appreciated.......pro or con.....its a learning curve right now for me.
I always buy parts with future options and try to just recoup what I paid if I change directions (often....lol)

You have given me food for thought though. ANYONE running Richard's suggested system? I'd like to hear that too.

Daytona sensor would be great if you are drag racing. I Use the Crane HI6 R which is a nice sequential rev limiter multi spark box that installs with water proof jacks. so if you suspect a problem you can just disconnect the input and output jacks and then just plug them together eliminating the box. I've never had a problem in over 10 years.


This is one of the best digital dizzys made.

I am confused - Did you get a Crane Unilite "optical" trigger or the Crane "magnetic trigger" version? There is a difference. Optical trigger uses a shutter wheel with windows that tiny light passes through to an electric eye, while the magnetic trigger uses a metal reluctor that passes an electronic pickup. The advertising seems to imply both so ???

I have a Crane HI-6 setup like what George is talking about working with a magnetic trigger. Gets the job done. Never tied any EFI though.

Thanks for the info about your setup. I am getting closer to putting engine # one together so I'll be on the lookout for a HI-6 with the rev limit function.
My dizz is the optical version for sure.
