1963 Coupe

Like everyone else, I am looking for another split window. Have one very solid prospect on my radar, reaching out to see if any forum members are thinking of parting with theirs. I sold my 340 car last winter and miss it more than I thought I would. My criteria is very specific:

Seeking a very well-sorted driven car. Must have:

-No-hit body (I am very picky on body condition and fits)
-Rust free birdcage
-Be complete and sorted out--I have no time for projects.
-300 or 340 horse
-4-speed

I am OK with color changes, and possibly OK with NOM if the price correctly reflects. Not picky on color scheme. Not extremely picky on paint condition, I like patina and Survivor cars (and I also have small kids so show car paint jobs cause high anxiety)

I have looked at every car on eBay, Hemmings, and other sites. No need to post links on any of those. Please PM with details on cars you are selling.

Thank you in advance for any leads.

Nick I am glad to see that you are back in the SW market. You had mentioned that you could buy your Silver car back from the museum that you sold it to, that you had an agreement with the person who bought it from you. That was an amazing car for sure that you had sorted out. You should consider buying it back for good karma.

Best of luck

Jay

Jay,

I am considering that avenue. I am weird in that I like to have a project. There are a few past cars I've had a chance to buy back and I never have. For some reason I like the challenge of starting with a lot of unknowns and sorting a car out. The only car I sold that I want to get back is my 67 400 convertible, which is in Rick Hendrick's personal collection and he will not sell it back to me.

Nick I hear what you are saying but now you are back in the SW market. OK so it will be interesting to see what you buy in comparison to what you had. I know the Silver car had a small repair and that can be bothersome but it was and I am sure still is a great example of a well sorted out SW. You could buy Docents red SW and have an equally nice car for the same price that you sold your car for. Just look at it as a trade.

I know that you are a perfectionist and I wish that I was also but sometimes that can take all of the fun out of things. I know that you will find another great car. Best of Luck.

Jay

Pushing this TTT one more time. Considering a couple cars but open to considering more.

I’m traveling for work almost all of July, so realistically I won’t be able to inspect and buy until August.

Have a strong preference for a 340 car, will consider a great 300 car. Condition and documentation more important to me than colors.

Will, thanks. We will be going to that auction to see the car and the Mercedes 560 SEC.

Refining my search:

MUST be an original engine car
Not interested in base engine OR FI cars (don't know how to work on FI, don't care to learn at this point)
Not interested in saddle tan exterior, but saddle interiors are OK
Want to buy between now and September so I have something to work on over the winter

Strongly prefer to buy from a private seller versus dealer or auction (tax advantage in Illinois, not because I have any mistrust/dislike of dealers). Not looking for a bargain, I am looking for a high-quality car and ready to pay a market-aligned price.

Supreme, a quick point: when buying at auction out of state, most of the major houses allow you to not pay their retail sales tax rate if the car is being taken out of that state. Just about always when an on site commercial carrier confirms it’s scheduled to go; not always as easy if you are transporting it yourself. But Illinois does recognize the private party rates (use tax) in these cases as long as you have that person’s name and they are not a dealer.

Just FYI.

That’s good information. My understanding (from conversation with someone at fall Mecum several years ago), is that IL sales tax would be collected (7% in my case, DuPage County). Now I don’t think I ever confirmed that was the case or researched it further as far as auctions outside IL are concerned. You are most likely correct.

There's a nice 14K mile silver red 340 HP coupe that the last detail is selling. It's also on ebay.

Steve, that is an amazing car, however way to special to drive.

fred kay 09-03-2019 04:15 PM

They are looking for $225k for the car. Spoke to them the other day. As per their description sounds really nice and original. Would go real nice with my 13k mile 65 , same color combo.

Thie Sotheby’s car had small bubbles under the paint over the entire front of the car

Didn't bother going to the auction; they couldn't produce more photos or detailed description of the car. My time is too valuable to waste on a fishing expedition.
