I'm not much of a drag racer with a manual, preferring to run HPDEs with both my '05 C6 and now the '06 Z06 having concentrated on the drags with my C5 which was an automatic.

Goal with the C6 Z06 was to run the spec ET of 11.7 and prove that a non quarter miler could do it. Ran 11.8. .

Decent 60ft time on 24lbs of air in the rears and 39lbs of air in the fronts hot. One click of the TC button and a first gear burnout, nothing fancy. Half a tank of gasoline.

Launch at 3100 RPM in 73* weather today. Slight bog and then on into the gas.

I am in the right lane.

This is a completely showroom stock run on the street runflats.

*well, it does have the CAGs eliminator and the Window Valet on it.




Oh well. The spec is 11.7, I ran 11.8. Just my 6th pass. Missed the spec by about 6/100 of a second. Trap speed suffered immensely due to short shifting the 1-2 and the 2-3.

But the car, with practice, definitely has 11.5-11.6 in it at around 123 mph. These things are real beasts on a quarter mile strip. I know that I left 2 tenths and about 4-5mph out there today, short shifting.

I have about 3-4 more trips to the strip available to me before the track closes for the winter and looking for 11.6 before season end.

I solicit any comments, pointers or criticism.

Good run, looks like you have a little more you can get out of it.

I'll get it, but it will require a bit more practice. These 6 runs I have learned to drive around Torque Management, and I am not doing too bad launching the car. 1/8 mile though, I should be at least at 96-98 mph.

Not that they matter to ET and Trap speed, but I expected my reaction times to suffer some going to this car, but I have cut fairly decent lights.

 

Excellent work, especially for your first few runs.
Your 60' is outstanding and shows you've got the launch down. For many C6Z drivers, this is the most difficult part to learn.

After you launch, pay very close attention to the tachometer and get your shift points down. If you can do this, your times will continue to improve.

As far as Torque Management, for now don't worry about it. On street tires, it is your friend.

I hear and agree with what you are saying.

The shift points are the hardest part for me dgdoc.

I never look at the tach and go by the engine sound.

I know what 6,000-6500 RPM "sounds" like and I reflexively shift at or slightly above that point and that has cost me big time since the car redlines at 7K.

I am completely unfamiliar with what 6900 or 7K sounds like. So when its time to shift, I'm lost. I'm either too early or too late.

I either shift too early or hit the rev limiter. Both have been a stumbling block.

I have HP Tuners with another license on it from when I had my '05.

I am thinking about hooking it to the car and doing a data log to see exactly where it is that I am shifting.

But yes, thanks for your imput, as I highly value it, And if I get the shift points down, then there should be some improvement.

Forget R/T. Work on technique & shift points. You'll need to wind out further each gear & shift FAST to improve on your time. Watch the tach CLOSELY, especially on the 1-2 shift. I think I watch the tach as much, if not more then the track ahead of me.....

Dr. Ron, are you watching the HUD tach? If so, which mode? Do you rely on the "shift light" at all?

 

i watch the dash tach. when i am racing i dont see the hud. i must block it out. jmho

90 MPH is very low for a Z06.....in my only trip to the track I ran the 1/8 mark at 7.41 @ 99.XX...so you did a heck of a job making it up on the second half. Congrats!

I would agree this car is a solid high 11 car. What times were on the other runs? I did track time yesterday with about the same conditions but with very strong winds. Traction control was on for all runs with my best , the last of 7, at 12.006.

 

I had run 12.23 just before that on a 2.1xx 60ft time before dropping the rear tire pressure. I got to the track late and came in on the stock air pressure of 32-33 lbs in the rears. I had stopped beforehand to up the fronts to 39 lbs.

This was my first 11 second run.

Of the 6 the worst of the lot is described here and was the first quarter mile pass I ever made in the car.

Running in competitive mode, stock air in all 4 tires, poor seat positioning, really just up and decided to go to the track that day because I was doing nothing else. Doing everything wrong.

Had not even bothered to look at the available advice for running with one click of the TC button or tire pressure, etc.

I did an HPDE last weekend and have decided to try and run the spec or better in the quarter mile before fall/winter set in and I put the car away.

I may even be able to get an autocross in before it gets too cold.

 

I guess I will have to wait until next year for my 11. This was my only track time and the first run was 12.3. (Last year' attempt did not count 14.7 and with no traction.) I was surprised and nervous about the run and did not want to get too anxious for the next run. Too many threads on the weak rear axles and ugly thoughts about breaking 100 miles from home base. Next runs were 12.4 and then 12.1.
The Z06 is the car. Just add more driving experience .
