The background: I was stopped at a light. The light turned green and I attempted to take off. I went about 19 feet and the car felt like the e-brake was on. I went another 10 feet and I heard a crack.
That...is my rear. The bolt snapped in the middle and then backed out. As it backed out it was spinning and sheered off the large chunks of metal you can see along the sides of the case.
It just freaking broke. I wish the story was more involved then what I typed....but its not. I took off from a red light in traffic and the car just felt weird then I heard the noise.
I took the car to Englishtown once.. about 30k miles ago. I only have the mods in my sig, so I'm not making a lot of power (maybe 350-360 to the wheels) and I never do burnouts or powershift the car.
The car has 47k miles, its a 6 spd. The rear is now at Cartek and the car is in my garage on jackstands.

You got a 100,000 mile warranty on the drivetrain...take it in to the dealer! In these economic times, they might overlook all your toys and fix it! I'd have Cartek or whoever, put back in your stock tune first, though

Well, I have HP Tuners.... All I have to do is go in and put it back to stock. I guess I'm gonna have to find a dealer in NJ who is mod friendly and then go to Cartek get the rear and throw it back in the car.. or just have the whole thing towed to the dealer.
Thanks for the heads up about the warranty...that could save me about 3k cause I think the case is shot.
The dealer can tell if you had a tune even if you put it back to stock tune. I'd give it a shot though. Good luck; I hope it all works out well for you.

Not true despite what the naysayser's say here. It is true for those with a Denali engine ECM but not the LSx ECM. Though the dealers can tell if you dont have a stock tune.

Ah yes this is what happens when the son reads great stuff on this forum
The picture does not really tell the entire story. For those of you who have gone to the wide body conversion besides making sure that the rear tires are properly loaded, you also have to be concerned with the increase in rotating mass.
Joey has the Z06 knock off wheels and 345s on the back...... much more weight than the increase of six pounds that I had originally calculated.
Ever wonder why back in the day there were 8 & 3/4 and Dana rears for the Mopars..... or why the Z06 rear is larger than the C6 rear.... well now you know.
I had actually though of bringing it back to the dealer but once they see those 13.5 inch tires in the back..... it was not worth the trip so we took out the rear. At first I thought the bolt backed out but it snapped and the entire carrier is toast as well as the side cover (you can' t see it in the picture). I have set up many rears in my day but...... I am too old to be tightening pinion bolts to a gazillion foot pounds
I'm gonna see if I can do it. I'm gonna have to read up on the powertrain warranty. If its not covered its going to be quite expensive.
A couple months ago I had my driver seat cushion and leather cover replaced at a private shop since I don't trust my dealer and they're always too busy anyway. I had an idea to email GM Detroit and ask for a refund since I was still under warranty. To my surprise they went for it, but just the parts, not the labor.
I did have to lie and say the dealer was backed-up with work and couldn't do the job in a satisfactory amount of time, which would have been true if I had actually gone to the dealer. So anyway, you might try and recover the cost of parts from GM (if they're still around by then.) They'll ask for all the receipts. Worth a try.
There is no way the extra weight of the wider tires and wheels are going to cause a rear to grenade. The theory is correct, but its just not enough to blow a rear up.

Thats what I was thinking. I only added about 10-12 lbs of rotating mass to each side. The thing is that something had to casue the bolt to snap (it snapped and then backed out). I have never launched the car or bounced the rear end around...so I have no idea what the cause could be.
Regardless, I will contact GM and see what they can do. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on some bailout money.
