Default getting oil out of fibreglass

Hi all, i have a client with an unfortunate problem. When his car was transported to aust in a container, it appears that the car on top has leaked transmission fluid onto the removable hardtop. The top was painted and in poor contition, thus fluid has soaked into the glass thru the paint crazing. The area is quite large, about 18'' diameter.

how do we fix this one? As much as i hate to soak fibreglass with any fluid i feel this may be the only way... either hot soapy water, solvents, something! probably have to repeat and dry out many times?

or is it basket case?

any idea's greatly appreciated

thanks all

Would "aust" be Australia? If so that's good, summer's coming. Put it outside in the heat to bake. Keep wiping the oil off. Yes, it will take a while.

Porchdog will slap me, but I'd use thinner to wipe. I think he has some other product he likes that works also.

bake in the sun and use simple green or dawn soap once a day until gone . ppg dx330 wax and grease remover after that . 330 is "first clean" so it is pretty harsh. do not use it first though or you will dissolve the fluid and drive it further into the class.

When your hardtop is outside...flip it upside down...and the ATF will come to the top surface ...where it can be wiped off with chemicals. This allows gravity to help in this issue...causing the fluid to go down...which will make it appear on the top surface of the hardtop.

I just had to do a hood on a 1970 with a major oil spot in it...due to an oil breather puking oil on the underside for along time and the owner not keeping up with "things". I turned the hood upside down...and applied a heat lamp on the engine side of the hood... and got the oil to flow to the top surface..(which was facing towards the ground) and wiped it off...and did this for about a week and got the oil stain to go away. If you can remove the headliner...this may help in allowing the sun to get to the fiberglass and really heat things up.

Maybe this will help you also...if other ideas do not fix it.
