hi need help buying a sport car
If your buying a vette fist things first.
Drive it. A c6 should ride very smooth and handle great
Listen to it. A healthy ls2 should purr not tick or knock
Look at it. Vetts ride low check the front bumper for damage, look for obvious body damage that's been repaired and look for paint overspray.
Buy a one or 2 owner car. They will or should know the details of previous maintenance and history.
Check car fax for salvage or serious recurring maintenice issues like transmission brakes or suspension.
Idk I'm sure theres more but thats what I can think of
The rear differential was strengthened starting in '06, but if the car was not tracked or you don't plan on drag racing it, then you are probably OK.
There are a lot of stories here on how the '05 is an inferior car and have issues, since it was the first model year for the C6, but there are also a lot of guys here who have had 0 issues with theirs.
you trust inspect everything...
have a dealer run a GMVIS report (from the VIN) and review all the work that was done on the car...
verify that any re-calls/TSBs were performed...

Yes, there are plenty of satisfied 2005 C6 owners. But here are some reasons the 05 gets a bad rap:
-- 05 with manual transmission is the ONLY year C6 with a steering column lock. Make sure yours works smoothly -- you don't want an expensive repair or, worse, to be stranded!

-- 05 dead-battery-syndrome (DBS) was a real problem... fixed by computer reflash. Well-known issue, so the 05 you're looking at was probably fixed by now.
-- Just a heads-up so-you-don't-kill-the-battery: 2005 with manual transmission MUST be parked in reverse gear, or the battery will drain. This is not DBS. See pg 2-31 in the owners manual: http://www.gmpartshouse.com/download...05corvette.pdf
-- Some folks delight in hammering/abusing 400 hp, damaging the rear end -- which was beefed-up for 06. Other year-to-year changes: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/1563694469-post5.html
Also from the above thread:
Check on this forum for VIN's with early builds having loose crank pully.
Check all position on the horn button to make sure no dead spots.
Check the underside to make sure the rockers are not cracked and the
"supposed" skid bars do not have broken welds.
On cold start make several sharp turns (figure 8's even better)and see if posi clutch plates are sticking.
Listen for column lock cyl. to move freely.
Push the rear trunk black button and see if it releases the trunk.
Have Chev. dealer pull up Warr. repair record.
None of which cannot be fixed, just need to find 'em before you have to pay to fix 'em...
