Default Whats that relay/switch thingy on my Firewall

Thats the best way to describe it. It is the engine compartment of my 74 Vert. It is above the heater core pipes on the passenger side. To the left of the hood alarm switch. It is about 1 inch by 3 inches and sticks out of the firewall. It has 4 wires coming from it (Red, Green, Black, Purple) and what looks like a button under a rubber cover. It has a plastic base on it screwed to the car and the unit itself is a silver metal...

Is it a relay of some sort??

Nope. Not from what that pic looks like. The wires go in the back, so I don't see any connections. The rubber button is on the front facing towards the front of the car... Maybe aftermarket?

Default Seat Belt interlock overide.

See P12-43 & P12-62 in you 74 service manual.

Only on 74 & early 75s to make you buckle up before the car would start.

Default just as described.....

It is the seat belt interlock as Ed T stated, only as you stated, that is not the correct pic that you are looking for, as that pic probably is without the cover on it. If your seat belts are operating correctly in the 74
they must be connected for the engine to start when a person(s) occupy that seat.
"If Starter Still Will Not Operate:
Set parking brake firmly, move transmission lever to "Park" (reverse for manual transmission cars with clutch fully depressed)
TURN IGNITION KEY TO "ON" ("RUN")
Open hood and press button on manual override switch labeled "START", mounted on bright orange support at rear on engine compartment on passenger side-see illustration.
Close hood, enter car, fasten seat belt and follow normal starting procedures."

The above is from the 1974 Corvette owner's manual, page 7

That is the switch you are referring to, hope this helps........Tom

Ahhh, you are very right! Now that I saw other pics, it sure is the seatbelt relay..

I want to remove it or just move it to another location. I am trying to clean up the engine bay and it looks silly... So my car starts fine. No seat belt needed. Can I remove it?? And if so, what can I do, snip the wires off and take it off the firewall?

Since it starts, does that mean it was already bypassed??

or it means that it is not plugged in under the seat to the seat belt.....
I still have mine intact and plan to keep that way. but I imagine you could disconnect it from the engine bay without any problems, or just leave it unplugged as it probably is now.

If you don't care about original looks, remove the orange mount, solder the green and purple wires together, heat shrink and tape it up into the harness.

If you want to keep it, follow the pics to bypass and no one can tell.

I wouldn't butcher a possibly good and pricey relay.
