Default Let's compare software versions...

I have a service appointment coming up and I'm thinking about asking to get the latest software. I have a 2016 Z51 3LT. The only version info I've found (other than open source software the vette uses) are

Gracenote: 23199236
Map: 23346621

What versions do you have? Anybody know the version numbers for the latest software or how to find that out?

With the ignition on (engine running is fine) press simultaneously "POWER" "HOME" & "MENU". That will bring you to a screen showing all the software information for your car.

Ah yes! I knew there was a lot more software versioning information but I forgot how to get there. I'm gonna capture that info and post it soon.

Generally speaking, they won't just update the software because you ask them to. They will update software if you are complaining about a problem that the software revision addresses. A modern high end car like the C7 has more code than you might realize - 100 million lines of code. Compare that to Windows 7 at 40 million lines of code. Do you really want them to update software just so you can have the "latest version" if you are not experiencing problems?

Of course, the map software is user updateable (for $159) via USB.

Exactly my thinking - and map update is cheap my Grand Cherokee map was over $500.00

Is the map updateable by the owner? Do you buy the map and install it on a flash drive to update? I'm not computer geek. Probably a dumb question but I updated the map on my wife's Lexus using a DVD.

When you buy the map update, it is sent to you on a USB thumb drive coded to your vehicle VIN. Plug it in and do the update yourself.

That's just assnine!

As a software build and release engineer for over 25 years I'm calling BS! No way is there that much code in a car. Sure there are probably intense calculations for the various systems that say control the braking or fuel mixture, steering or whatever. I'm not asking for updates to probably 95% of the code in the car - I'm just wanting the code that I'm interacting with directly like the Nav, Radio, Gracenote or whatever. Think of it this way - I'm not asking them to update the code that handles track mode, for example.

And I highly doubt that there's anywhere close to 100 million lines of code in a car. I find that highly suspect and I wonder if they are counting stuff that just is not code but is data.

Do you really want them to update software just so you can have the "latest version" if you are not experiencing problems?
You bet your *** I do! As a professional software engineer you always want to be on the latest released code! This is regardless if you have a problem with the current code. We in the software business have learned over the years how to develop, update and support code. This is how you do it - period, full stop. Having people on old code is the WRONG way to do it and we all know that the software engineers over in GM are not that good at developing software. The reason you update software is to make it better. Why would you then deny your customers this better code? And as a customer why wouldn't you demand it? Yes you can introduce new bugs but in general you are fixing more bugs than you are introducing.

Of course, the map software is user updateable (for $159) via USB.
Does that update the software or just the mapping data?

Sad they will not update radio software because you asked, you have to have an issue. Very sad the map update is 159 dollars on a 70K car.

My Stingray is 2 years old, no updates, 70K new.

My CVO Road Glide Ultra, 1 year old, 3 free radio software updates I down loaded my self from HD web site. On Free Map update. Just put empty USB in bike, up load Nav/radio ID Info. Then put usb in computer and go to map site, if the bike is less than five years old, and the numbers match you get your free map update. This is on a 40K bike

Yes the Stingray has lots of lines of code, radio software, then there are engine, body and other control modules, which all have their own code. Same with my bike.

Seems Chevy could give us maps for five year like Harley does. They could update or radio software when updates come out like Harley does.

You should ask them to update it then if you feel that strongly about it.

My take is that the car code is static, it's not like I'm updating things or changing things. If it all works, I don't want it updated, it's not like they're adding new features or anything. But it's your ride, have them update it.

I don't make GM policy, I'm just telling you what you are likely to encounter at your dealer.

If I was encountering a problem, I would demand the update. If the software fixes a problem that I don't have, then I really don't need it and I don't need to take the chance that it introduces a new bug.

To the best of my knowledge, just the map data.

I don't believe they do any software updates with this. Here's the link to the GM NAVDISC web site:

http://gmnavdisc.navigation.com/prod...en_US/GMNA/USD

As for maps, it seems like 2016 owners would have the most current version unless yours was an early production 2016 where the the latest map update wasn't out yet. I believe they started offering the latest version toward the end of September.

I have a 2014 I had the software updated on in Jan 2015 and it shows me these values.
  • Software - 23266025
  • Gracenote - 23443783
  • Map - 23480133

It's odd my numbers would be higher than yours.

I agree, I also hate how GM treats software updates to cars. I really wish they would be more pro-active like Tesla on doing updates for features. The existing process is slow and confusing to the technicians.

Doing some more digging it's because those items are part #s and not software version numbers...

I went and did that yesterday and got these versions. I know the map version will change but I'm very curious if the map SW version will change too.

Main HMI software page.

MY14 HMI 2.0 with SW 12.6N185

Navigation page which I believe was near the bottom.

It looks like there might be a newer version of the HMI firmware for your vehicle. I found the Bosche Open Source Software repo and it lists a build newer than what you have. I'm comparing the source of versions still to see if it contains what might be the differences between versions.

Your Build - 15.1A044
Latest Build - 15.1A052

My speech to text stuff is all from Jan 2013 too. Looks like the 12.6N185 version is the latest build for MY14 cars so no updates for me unless I jump HMI modules.
