Default Stock HU question

My 05 stock HU with Nav quite working just locked up. Anyway dealer wanted $3000 to replace it and upgrade the software. NSFW as what i said to service tech. My question is there anyone out there that will do a swap for a rebuilt one. Some will say just get a new DD unit and i did with the wiring harness. But is there anyone do this with used HU. Thanks

Short of cutting the air duct, the only way to get the HU unit out and back in is removing the dash.

As for locked up, what do you mean?

The normal problem for the units is the pivot arm section breaks and it not longer aiming correctly at the dash, and you have to pull the unit to repair the units pivoting arm.

As for a lock up problem in the sense that you can see the HU display on the windshield (not a broken pivot arm problem with the display aimed at the windshield in-correctly), but is not changing, have you just disconnected the battery for a few mins, and reconnected to hard reset the unit?

If its giving a funky display instead (that is changing), then it may be something simple like the connector plug loose, and you just need to pull the dash gauge assembly to plug its connector all the way back in instead.

I think he is talking about the head unit (HU), and you are talking about the heads up (HU) display.

Yes, the head unit can be replaced with a used unit. It takes about 35 mins to make the swap and then you have to go to the dealer to marry that head unit to the EBCM. You will need the VIN of the car that the radio was removed from to have it installed. Some refurb places actually clear them so they are just plug and play. Make sure you ask.

You can buy a used head unit and replace the one you have for a fraction of the price. A lot of guys sell theirs after installing after market head units. I know I just recently sold mine to a fellow forum member a week ago. The factory head units have a anti theft security feature that you might have to go to the dealer to unlock it after installing a used one. Check out the audio section to the forum, there might be some helpful information available over there too.

User Omega beat me to it, what he said.^^^

I would try removing power from the HU first. Either disconnect the battery or the fuse for a minute may reset it.

Easy to do if your interested in keeping the stock unit.

I like the integration with the HUD and the NAV of the OEM setup that you will lose if you replace the HU with a aftermarket one.

The good news is that the installation of an OEM nav unit is very easy. Also, you can search this forum (search for PariaTNDude post) to print out the actual instructions that you can take to the dealership. This tells them exactly how to use the tech II tool to unlock the HU. if you aren't aware, if you purchase an hu from another member it will lockup as soon as you start the car. You can play the radio and see nav screen with acc on but when you start the car it locks up as a theft deterrent.

Take the instructions with you. My dealership said it couldn't be done and I finally talked them into letting me talk with the tech. I gave home the instructions and five minutes later it was done.

They charged me $200! Ridiculous.

Omega , Why do you need the VIN from the car that the radio was removed from ??

You don't. The vin from your car replaces the one in the used HU.

Yep , I know that ...
I was asking him why he though he needed it

The TECH II wipes out the vin that is currently stored in a used unit and the first time the car is started the radio learns the VIN that it is now attached to

My apologies guys.

The dealer who installed the NAV I sold claimed they needed my VIN to setup the radio for the guy who bought it. Maybe they wanted to insure it wasn't stolen?? Still a possibility they may ask for it. I assumed it was required.

I haven't actually been through the steps on the Tech II to know what is or is not required.
