Default Heat in tunnel and console and asbestos smell?

Last summer I was traveling to VT and running up RT 91 (150 miles, at 75 MPH) in hot weather in my 2010 M6 GS Coupe.

When I got off the highway in VT, I could smell an odor like asbestos and the contents of the console were noticeably warm.

I only smelled the odor when at a stop or very low driving speed in traffic 5-15 MPH
I checked my E Brake, for engagement.... no problem, it was fully off.

My Clutch was acting normally with no difference in pedal or engagement, and My gages were all normal.

I had the car checked out the next week at my dealers by a World Class Corvette Technician, and we could find no reason for the odor...........

This only happened a few times that weekend, and did not occur again, but that trip was probably the longest 75 MPH trip in that type of hot weather.

Has anyone else experienced this?...What did you find, if anything.........

Any help or suggestions are appreciated

Thanks

Never had any odor, but sure had the heat.

I then insulated the bottom of the tunnel plate, and took the console out and insulated under it.

Now, the heat is hardly noticable

Seadawg,

Thanks for the reply............I was suspecting Exhaust system heat was the culprit.

Can you be more specific on what you did and how you did it?
What type of insulation did you use, and how did you access the area(s)

Thanks

The tunnel heat is a known issue on these cars when on a long ride in certain conditions. Nothing to worry about other then maybe some discomfort from the added heat. I don't know if the odor you experienced was related or not, but I probably wouldn't worry about it unless it continues to persist.

The search button is your friend. Many, many threads on the console heat. Search console, tunnel plate, heat, so many ways...insulation,etc. You can read for days.

11G.S. A6 ...while installing headers

(Boom mat) installed helps with heat much. I did cut and install pieces in cc and drink holder.

[I]Car raised and degreased with simple green , blown dry. tunnel plate removed and applied sticky side down. I am happy with results!

Taped seams with metal dust and burnished.

What you are smelling is most likely burn off from the CATS. I had this happen to me once on a brand new 350Z and I thought that I burned up the car. We drove on long trip from Texas to Florida straight threw, and when we stopped there was quite the smell. Never occurred again, but was very concerning at the time. '

Probably no big deal. Just keep an eye on it. Good Luck.

Car not going to mash or break (WOOD)

Wood 6"x 6 " x 2' P.T. PINE...... Top two tied together with wheel chocks across, front and rear W/5" inch long screws.Car going no where (front to rear) .... or (left to right)

especially while sitting on 3 ton jack stands in front. Again no front to rear or left to right movement going to happen.

Outside of a lift...... I Challenge, you to put up PICS ,what you believe is safer method and remember this has worked many/many times before.

We"ll let public have a say!

You up to the challenge: hrt vlv or TorchRedFred

I have asked,...... next move yours !!!!!! ...... LOL

Haha, I never said it was unsafe. Was just surprised to see it up there with the blocks. Really I was just trying to clear up some confusion on the post. But we got to do what we got to do. I've been known to come up with some creative home remedies myself. No harm meant, all in good fun.

I got under the car and put 2 pieces of this on the bottom of the tunnel plate, and trimmed it.
Amazon Amazon

I then used this under the console.
Amazon Amazon
trimmed it to fit, tucked it under beside the seats, etc.

I found instructions out here how to remove the console.

I also used more of this
Amazon Amazon
to sound deaden the inside of my rear fender liners too. They come out fairly easily, once you take off the rear wheels.

HK770, you are right, this is a lot harder than it looks......, and I'm gonna need some more glue.

That's because you have no idea what your doing! It's Resin and fiberglass time. Glue is just a temp fix, at least the way it see it.

Of coarse like as always, your mileage may very. ....... LOL

Fact: Asbestos doesn't smell. Has no scent or odor.

How much material did it take to do them?

Did you put it on the body or the fender liner? I was going to use peel and stick on the liner to deaden the sound. But, I found it to be extremely heavy and was concerned the few mounting screws wouldn't support the liner with the extra weight under impact loads ( bouncing over bumps).
