After reading this whole thread I have concluded that the term used so frequently by our younger brethren that "old men drive Vettes" may be true what with all the "SLOW DOWN" warnings handed out so far. If its safe and not loaded with traffic I say go for it, otherwise buy a Prius. What's the purpose of having a fast car if you don't let it eat once in awhile ? JMHO To each his own

I agree with you NSF. I read some of the posts on this forum and quite a few fit the "mid-life crisis" stereotypes, I wonder why they bought a Vette in the first place! I guess they want to be the cool dude at the 55 & over community. News Flash: it takes more than a car! I mash my go peddle whenever I can, nothing puts a smile on my face quicker! Fun starts at 100+

It all has to do with using good judgment as far as conditions also. We have long stretches of fairly good hwy where I did this (recently paved) just as one member posted a photo of.
I also posted a YouTube video of the 2 morons who were racing on a freeway with traffic, NOT COOL.
So it boils down to judgment, Some have it some don't.
If you care to see some really idiotic street racing then YouTube has plenty to crow about but IMO don't come on the CF and preach to the guys that once in awhile let their big dog eat, please

I'm with you NSF. I had my previous C5 up as high as 165 on a lonely stretch of road with not even an armadillo in sight, and my C6 up to 145 so far on a similar stretch of road. It doesn't hurt to blow the carbon out of the exhaust system every once in a while when there isn't another soul around.

I wonder if the people who are chastising the OP are people who have a radar detector. Why have one if you're so perfect and don't speed?

Do you smoke, or consume alcohol, or food that contain excessive sugars and fats? You know that ****'s bad for you right? drugs perhaps?

Judge yourself, I get this is a "public" forum. But, I see absolutely nothing wrong with what he did. Open highway, no one around, why not. don't act like you haven't done it, or do it. Don't act like you're a pristine, shining, example of perfection in humanity. The arrogance is astounding, but this is a corvette forum.

While I do not agree with John, I give him credit for sticking around. Most would have run off to their "safe spaces" by now. One of the many great things about this country (besides the Corvette) is we have the right to agree to disagree and voice our opinions.

Thanks, after 10 years and working towards 5k posts, been around long enough to know how it works. It's usually the guys that have been here a few months and around 100 posts that find this kind of thing to be a big deal. Bottom line, just a forum of friends, nothing to jump off the bridge over.

I hope some day to be this wise... For now, i'll keep trying to learn along the way with my 26 year old mind!

Most people aren't attacking Jon, some are for sure, but I think the general consensus is more of a "ragging on him" for lack of better terms and I'm glad he understands that.

Been both the rag-or and the rag-ee many times. Not the first or last time I'll insert my foot into my mouth here for sure.

Jon, I don't think anyone is judging you. Maybe I missed something but to each his own, and if the OP, myself & others choose to open it up a bit, then so be it. Personally I've been racing sanctioned events for almost 30 years, does that lead to the street, well if all the elements come together, then sometimes yes. But I've never raced or drove recklessly on a street where children could be playing, or I have to worry about other civilians mistakes.

We had a thread here a few weeks back that some will remember about the "Best tires for street racing". Man, did that open up the flood gates, and it did get dirty, bad enough it finally got shut down. Like NSF said, it all has to do with good judgement. I've seen too many idiots driving cars that have no place going fast in populated areas, and endangering the lives of others. I value my life and the life of others too much, and when I want to get down, I make sure it's on my terms & I'm the only one effected. If you choose to drive your Vette at the posted speed limits all the time, then that's your prerogative and no one should have anything to say about it. On the flip side, let others do as they please, hopefully it's in a safe manner & doesn't endanger others. I'd just hate to see this thread go in the direction of the street racing thread, cause it turned ugly.

One can drive at speed sensibly on occasion. I have been to Germany 5 times and always driven at hight speed on the autobahn....maxed my bmw rental at 138 constantly. Its a matter of mindset....germans know that you stay out of the left hand lane unless you are passing...if someone comes up behind you , you move over promptly or you are going to get a porsche or mercedes tailgating you at 150! Yes I do occasionally take my my vette well over a 100 for short bursts on an empty road here with good visiblity. Heck...never had an accident at speed...just got cut off by a bozo making a left turn from a side street right in front of me...I was only doing 25...christened my new vette.
