I pulled my carpet out today to install RAAMatt sound deadening insulation. when i pulled out the passenger side cubby, there is an electronic box beside it. What is it?

Actually it's called Vehicle Communication Interface Module (VCIM).
Just curious. Does that exist on pre-'08's that don't have the OnStar option? And is the wiring there to allow it to be dealer installed?
The reason I ask, is that the Navigation voice recognition system was also an option that I would assume processes through the VCIM. For instance, an '06 could be ordered with the Nav, but without OnStar.
Also, it appears that although OnStar was considered as standard equipment starting in '08, yet production figures range from only 95% to 98% of the cars were equipped with it. Maybe it was only standard on the lower 48 states.
Looking at this it appears the only thing it's needed for is OnStar but, like you said if you had nav but no OnStar I think you would still need this VCIM because the microphone for nav voice commands runs through it.
