Greetings. I have a cheap, non-automatic, non-fully retractable, non-flush mount antenna on my '65 convertible. So, I purchased one of these from Eckler's Corvette to fix those problems.
I was on the creeper this morning removing the old antenna, and the previous owner did a total hack job and just placed the panel in this picture kind of behind the tail lights - unsecured. I pulled it out (it is attached by a metal band, so it is still in the tail section) and snapped this picture. It is still totally loose and unsecured. Any ideas on what this panel is used for and how it attaches to the body/frame and where? Thanks.
Boom! Thanks! That gave me what I need for a quick google. I'll have to figure out how this mounts. Here's a picture for future reference if anyone else finds this post:
Can you keep us updated on your installation? My power antenna has quit on me and I was looking at the one you bought as a replacement.
Will do. Might be a few weeks - taking my time over the winter on this and other projects on the car. This is definitely more involved than what I had hoped, but you'll probably be in better shape because the one I'm replacing isn't power.

Thanks, I edited my original post to ask if it's indeed a Metra 44-pw22 and to ask about the cable
Nowhere...Do you what they get to repair an original antenna? Crazy man... CRAZY...and I don't like that it's not flush, why would they ever design something like that. Like a window that only goes halfway down!

Probably why C2's only got this power antenna for 65 & 66, since it was problematic with the water running down into the winder housing and once the drain hole got plugged, it corroded up pretty fast and eventually seized. For all of us who are still using the original power antenna's, its absolutely critical to check the drain hole periodically to ensure its open. FWIW. Bill
I used that aftermarket power antenna on my 61. It took a combo of original mounting pieces and some from the antenna package to fit the compound slopes on the ducktail rear end. Yes, it required an extension cable.

50+ year old cars have design features that differ from modern design features. Probably why many/most younger people have zero interest in 60s era cars, if any cars. I love my 65, and covet that wonderful power antenna unit, even though it sticks up when down. Never gave that design "flaw" a thought. Greg Thompson in KC area restores them for around $450 last I heard. As original. And sells them outright. Email me for contact info.
The aftermarket power antenna is pretty sweet if you use a car cover or raise a convertible on a lift...operation is at the end of this video...when the radio is turned off the antenna lowers -- flush:
The ground plate/plane is there to amplify the antenna strength. The ground plane helps to make the antenna appear taller to the radio waves. If you don't have it installed your signal strength will be less.

It's true, the GM OEM antenna sticks about 10" offa' the body when "fully retracted" and it costs a fortune to have restored. But, if you got one, and it works ... It is just so cool.

HITCH
Exactly right - folks need to understand that on cars without metal bodies special attention has to be paid to all aspects of radio operation and electrical conductivity
