If There is a Bolt, There Should Be a Nut...Right?
I was finishing up my oil change on my car tonight and wiping down a few items when I noticed a couple of bolts that look like they should have nuts on them. I looked at them a little closer and it looks like these bolts are the engine mount bolts that go thru the engine cradle. Hmmm, shouldn't there be nuts on them?? Seems odd..
I have owned the car since it had 3800 miles on it. I bought it from the original owner who was pretty meticulous like myself...I have never heard any noises under heavy acceleration.. Can anyone verify this condition on your car?
2008 C6 A6 Z51,
I know that my leaf spring bolt doesn't have a nut on it but the spring has so much pressure on it I doubt it would need one. But, this looks like it seriously needs a bolt if it holds the engine to the subframe.

I have a C6 on the lift in the garage and just had a look.....yes there are nuts on them.
What kind of work have you had done on the car since owning it w. 3800 miles? If nothing more than oil changes, I'd ask the prior, meticulous owner what he had done. Tell us what happens.

Maybe the previous owner had the balancer replaced and the mechanic dropped the cradle instead of moving the steering rack.

Thanks For verifying.

I have no idea. I may have to call the original owner and find out. I am going to have a service history run on the car tonight when I pick up my new nuts....

I do not think that is the issue, more than likely it was done while working on the car. The question is what were they repairing, HB, Oil Pan leak, Steering rack?? If they replace the oil pan gasket they did not do a very good job as it still seeps a tad bit of oil!!

Thanks for the info, do you think that 50ft-lbs would also be the spec for the stock mounts?
Thanks all for the information, I guess I will find out more tonight when I run the service history at the dealer.
Oil pan gasket is a likely candidate that led to this. I did an oil pan gasket on a C6 after the dealership basically hosed it. They could have done it and misdiagnosed the leak anyway, then left the nuts off. Dealerships can get "in a hurry" when they're trying to make money on warranty work, which was the case with the one I did.
Not likely the HB as most who change the HB don't remove those nuts all the way.

Plausible.
Done under warranty it'll show on GMVIS.
Might be as simple as factory never tightened to spec, missed it, and they simply vibrated off. A factory screw-up.
Good thing OP caught it, although it might've motored off into the sunset for years unnoticed until new mounts were needed.

That was Hinson's torque specs (50 ft-lbs) using the oem nut. GM specs are 48 ft-lbs for the upper and lower motor mount, nut to stud, at the upper side of the bracket and through the cradle. The motor mount brackets to engine block are 37 ft-lbs.
Check to see what is on the opposite side, make sure it is there and tight. I hate it when I have nuts, screws, bolts and washers left over from a project!

Yeah. Seems the only time the dealer mechanic gets in a hurry is when doing warranty work. The rest of the time they are slow as molasses in January.
