So it’s been a prettt amazing week for my C6 and I. I first off want to say that these cars are made very poorly. The quality is actually worse than a Kia in my opinion. Every little thing is falling apart on my car. I only have 60,000 miles on it and you would think it had 300,000 on it. The other day my roof blew off onto the highway. No, I didn’t forget to latch and lock. Everything is still latched and locked but the part where the adhesive attaches, blew off. I currently have garbage bags for a roof right now.
Then yesterday I get home late and my shifter is broken. The shifter goes into all the gears like one smooth motion but won’t shift to park. I had to disconnect the battery and now can’t drive it even with the garbage bags for a roof. In the meantime, can someone please help what my next move should be on the shifter? Is it the bushing that broke? And what do I do from there? Any help is appreciated.
There was a recall for the roof panel you should have taken care of long ago. Dealer will replace the roof panel.
Your shifter grommet is broken either at the shifter end or at the trans end. Take it to the dealer and spend big bucks or fix it yourself for nearly nothing.
Congratulations on your very first post after 11 years of membership here.
I wish it was that easy. The piece of crap dealer or GM won’t honor the recall since it “isn’t under my VIN”. Yet the same exact thing that they said would happen with the roof happened to me. I called GM multiple times and brought it to the dealership. They are no help whatsoever.
Isn't under your VIN? What the hell does that mean? What year is your car?
Most likely the shifter grommet is broken at the shifter end. You need to remove the center console to get at it and snap a new grommet into the linkage. There are many threads describing the procedure here if you do a search.
You know in these years you could say in profile little about yourself, year of car location your living in, so we know what year you are talking to us about, with your concerns.
Yes there was a recall on the shifter years back, when the cars had warranty, but today it will cost big $$$$ to repair and replace.
Have you ever brought your car into service and dealership and asked for it's history of warranty repairs to the Corvette.
That will tell you whoever had the car before you maintain there Corvette.
I hope you had the car serviced with that milage certain items needs fluid changes.
I hope you have good luck, with your car, and after repairs start enjoying the Corvette.
I'm sorry to hear about your misfortunes, however, as with anything mechanical performance is usually closely related to how well the item is maintained. You could have a $100k Mercedes & if you don't maintain it, guess what, things will break. I've had 23 different cars over the years of all makes & models (some that had very poor ratings for quality, dependability, etc.) however, the only one I ever had a major issue with was my '99 Trans Am that needed a new engine due to oil consumption which was a very wide-spread issue with the early LS1's. Other than that none of my other cars ever had anything wrong with them because I religiously maintain them.
I'd see if you can get the top replaced per the recall, and EVRose said, the issue with your shifter should be relatively easy/inexpensive to fix.
I bought the car brand new myself back in 2007 with 0 miles on the car. So any history is thrown out the window. As far as the recall. I have been trying for weeks now for the roof. GM is a piece of garbage for not honoring this. They said since they brought up my VIN and it says nothing about a recall on the roof, they cannot do anything for me. Can you believe this? It’s their fault with their adhesive issues. I could of killed someone on the road. The roof came off on the highway and I didn’t even look back to see as I didn’t want to crash myself. I am sorry but there is no excuse for a roof to come off and then the dealer not wanting to honor or fix it because my VIN doesn’t specify a roof recall. Unbelievable.
For the shifter, can anyone provide a link step by step on how to do this? I found a thread but can’t find it for a C6 corvette step by step. Thank you.
I appreciate the help, but do you see where it says “certain models” that right there is the problem. Yet my car is a 2007, didn’t fall under my car model, but the same thing happened where my roof came off. Most unbelievable thing I ever seen. My dealer doesn’t want to do anything. I also spoke to GM and they don’t want to either.
This is what I am trying to say. There is no recall when I put my VIN in. Yet, my roof came off like all the other models it did fall into. The piece of crap GM is, they won’t honor it. Like it was my fault the adhesive got loose and my roof blew off. Another dealer is going to say the same exact thing.
My next step would be to contact the NHTSA, and make them aware of the situation. It would have been better for you if you had retrieved the top, not only to help resolve the situation (evidence to research), but to prevent other drivers from having to swerve around it or run over it.

Here is step by step for MGW shifter install. It will guide you through removal of the center console for access.

Personally, I'd buy the MGW shifter first and just replace the entire assembly.

Just got a call from GM and they don’t want to help me at all again. I even spoke to a supervisor. As far as the top, I tried that. I was on the middle of i95 the top came blowing off and can you imagine the situation? I went back on i95 not to mention how dangerous of a situation that is, and it was no where to be found. I will never own a GM car the rest of my life. What kind of car does a top blow off? Then GM doesn’t even want to take care of it. Most unbelievable thing ever.
