Default C3 1971 Carburator Helpand opinions please

Qjet number 7041211 Corvette 1971 auto

One 'plastic/rubber' thing is leaking so I need to remove all of them and use a new two-component fuel resistant

number 72. I cleaned them already.
Hi US friends,

I imported a 1971 Corvette end of 2018. I had to do some work on it in order to succeed at the Belgian technical inspection (mandatory to get the tag and hit the road).

I relied on two young guys claiming they were having experience on oldtimers to replace the some parts at the ignition (coils, centrifugal springs, condenser, and sparks). Then to tune the advance.
I was running after that but not satisfactorily. They noticed dirt, rust and debris in the carb and claimed they dismounted the carb and cleaned it up, also the tank and the wiring.

OK...

After that, the car was running better but still hesitating/stumbling at idle. I was not really happy and started to read carefully Lars papers and many posts on this forum.

last montth, at cranking the cold engine, I had to repeatedly crank and crank and then the carb was flooding... So I stopped trying, beeing afraid to get that with a warm engine.

So I ordered a carb rebuild kit; it just arrived last week from the States.

With a friend we dismounted the carb, following a nice documented video on youtube. Of course the carb wasn't clean: debris and corrosion in the bottom, some gum, corrosion on the jets...

After reading Lars's last comments on this forum about the 'remanufactured' and hacked carbs, I have now my doubts about mine.
Is it the original one or not?

It is a Corvette 71 automatic (400); carb number is 7041211 which seems correct in term of year but i'm not sure it should not end up with an even digit at the end.

the actual jet are 72; the rods I dont know. I want to order 74 jets and 42 rods (wich is correct according to the table in Lar's papers)

Here are several pics for you to judge. I would appreciate some opinions...

- should I restore this one?
- should I look for another one?

Many thanks in advance,

Leonard, Belgium

I want to add that I plan to order ASAP
- 74 jets
- 42 rods
- the idle pickup tubes .035
- new paper filter and a new spring

i also imported a 1971 automatic (400); my carb number is 7041212. My 71 has the original Quadrajet and manifold. Mine idles a bit rough but not bad. The tack well jump between 5 and 7 hundred RPMs while idling... Here are some pics.

Quadrajet number 7041211 was used on a 1971 Chevrolet Truck, 10 Series, 350 engine.

thanks Dave in Spain. I guess mine is not original as indicated by the number. But I guess it can do the job after rebuilding. I see you didn't remove the solenoid on the side. I can't see nevertheless any vacuum tube connected to.

so Is it bad that this carb wasn't initially intended for a Vette?

Probably not if it works well, you will know it’s not the original carb but I don’t think anyone else is going to know, especially with the air cleaner on it. 😊

i hope some some of the more knowledgeable people here can tell you more...

Good luck, Dave

My 71 came with the truck version carb as well.

must have been changed over at some time in its life.

No issues with how it ran.

i did also source a correct model and have it rebuilt in the US then shipped to Australia. Not because the other model was a problem, more that I wanted to.

i also purchased a couple of dead quads to play around with and get familiar with how to strip them down and put back together.

As long as jets rods springs etc are in the correct range you should be fine.

Your spark plugs will tell you if the engine likes the carb.

That truck carb is very similar build to the 1971 Corvette carbs (7041212 auto; 7041213 man). I suggest that you send an e-mail with the info on your car and carb (and above photos) to Lars Grimsrud and ask him how to best modify the carb to perform properly on your car. The me, the carb you have does not appear to be damaged. But, Lars is the expert and will give you good advice on how to go forward.
